As far as I'm concerned, this only seems to be a problem with the digital release.
I put the top images of each comparison on a junk drive and checked them out on my PS3. They're much easier to make out on my TV than the computer.

I'm just going to wait for the Blu-ray review.

Yep, I bought it off Targetticket and I couldn't see a damn thing. It was a blind buy (literally, couldn't see in night scenes) and I was disappointed in the movie and the darkness of the picture.

Even the behind the scenes images are still darker than I'd like. Why must filmmakers make everything at night so damn dark? I want to be able to see everything. And add some color for goodness sake. Even in real life I can see more at night than I can in those images.

Just double checked my 2D BD and it matches the bottom shots, none of that severe black crush of the digital copy.

That's good to hear. I was getting a little worried there.

Exclamation Godzilla: Into Darkness

The BD association did this intentionally to the digital versions to push sales of Blu-rays! Expect to see this all the time folks, these people will stop at nothing until we all bow down to the mighty Blu. Also: "Something Something Illuminati".

It's dark out and there are no lights in the city whatsoever except for a couple of fires burning. Also don't remember seeing the moon at all. So to recap no natural or artificial light. I don't know much brighter you could possibly want it to be. Good luck seeing more in real life in the same situation.

The bottom images are pretty much how I remember the movie looking in theaters. I hope the Bluray looks more like that and less like the black boxes above them.

Aliens (All Xenomorph scenes): 9:40

Interesting, 8 mins doesn't seem so crazy anymore. And I'm aware that the Godzilla (1998) clip doesn't include the baby zillas, but the Godzilla (2014) clip doesn't include the Muto only scenes.

They wouldn't be trying to darken the image just to hide some flaws or limitations with the SPX would they? I haven't actually seen the film yet myself, so I'm just speculating.

I dont think so, when I saw the film on the big screen the effects looked great.

It's kinda like Sunset Boulevard and Godzilla is all like "Mr. Edwards, I'm ready for my close up!" But Mr. Edwards is too busy directing lots of other stuff that he leaves Godzilla just waiting to be called on stage.
