I just upgraded my PS3 to the latest version ... nice and simple with a hardewire connection .. 10 or so minutes and its done.. I was undecided between this and the Samsung 1500.. I'm glad I got the PS3 .. beautiful picture and great sound.. my younger daughter would also like to get some games so this thing will be really worth it..

My ps3 is very nice. I'm using a high quality TV with my ps3. Sometimes i wonder if i made a good choice, then i realize it was the best. I read amazing amounts of reviews on the PS3 wondering if it was a good choice, and i figured the Blu-ray just packed it all in the bag. The fact that it can store so much gives the advantage to blu-ray.

thumbs up!

So I got my PS3. Pictures amazing. But..I don't know how to set up my 5.1 Surround Sound..

I couldn't use an HDMI cable because of the TV..So I had to use a Component Cable.

How do I set it up..?

Connect the audio optical output to the optical input on your receiver ...

I still can not get a straight answer how to connect external USB hard drive to 40 GB PS3. I bought Toshiba 320 GB, with intention to place all my media on there (movies, photos and music) to view through PS3. No luck! It drives me nuts! Please can somebody help! new_aruba@yahoo.com

1080p@24 --- Yes.

External Hard drive... No NTFS for file system. If you use Fat32 the PS3 should see it. If you want your pictures, movies and videos to show up automatically on the ps3 then you have to put them in the root directory with folders named PICTURE, MUSIC, VIDEO for names.

Thanx Brian for quick response. My Toshiba external USB hard drive is Fat32 system, partitioned. Created folders "photo", "music" and "video". Placed files in correspondent folders. PS3 still does not see them. Is there any trick with external hard drive manufacturer? May be Toshiba incompatible? however it's hard to imagine... Any suggestion and thought will be of help. Thank you!

I may be wrong but... it has to be PHOTO, MUSIC and VIDEO. The caps are important for some reason.

You are correct. It has to be all caps.

Hi guys, I just bought a PS3 and I have a problem. I noticed that my PS3 cuts a bit of both sides of the image when playing 4x3 dvds. I have a Oppo dvd player connected to that same tv and it shows the full image. So I don't think it's my tv, it must be the PS3. Anybody else have this problem? How can I fix it? If it was just the dvds it would be fine since I will play them in my dvd player. But if the PS3 cuts the sides of 4x3 Blu-Rays too then that sucks.

UPDATE(!!!):
I finally end up buying a different brand HD from Western Digital, Fat32 file system partitioned (the same as my original Toshiba HD). Created folders: MUSIC, VIDEO, PHOTO, connected to PS USB port - here we go! PS3 could see all files on WD now in a split second! Never believed in ghosts before, but... Anybody has comments?.. PS3 recognizes external USB devices on brand-specific basis... It turns down Toshiba, but takes WD. Any thoughts? Is there still any chance to modify my Toshiba HD to be "visible" for PS3? I understand, this question is rather for computer brainiacs... any thoughts, please?..

another key features the ps3 has is the ability to stream media from your pc, upgrade hd to whatever size you wish and store media on the internal hd. any my 60gig can play sacd's
So wait, when you say you need an external memory in order to upgrade to 2.0, what does that mean? Also other than the 350 having 5.1 analog out are there no other advantages? I have an older Sony receiver w/ only optical or coaxial outputs so either device will have what I need I guess, can't upgrade my receiver now so whatever....

Am I better off just getting the PS3 then based on my older audio receiver?

Sorry if any of these seem like dumb questions, this is all fairly new to me. Thanks.

^^^ originally posted on the 350 thread but if anyone could help me out here I'd appreciate it. Basically wondering now if I'm better of getting a PS3 instead of the upcoming 350.

It appears that Sony has addressed a number of the BD and DVD related limitations and issues reported on the PS3 with the now available Firmware 2.40. Specifically:

- DTS-HD 7.1 to 5.1 remapping issue with certain Newline Cinema BD titles with FW 2.3 has been addressed and will now play as 7.1

- Deinterlacing of 1080i source material on BD to 1080p is now supported

- Improved DVD upscaling

- Supports DTS-ES matrix and discrete decoding to 7.1

- Supports DTS 96/24 decoding

- Adds "frame noise reduction" option for DVD playback

Deadly silent. The 360 made a lot of noise and there's barely any coming from this thing.

Setup was a breeze. It's already downloading firmware 1.10 so obviously Sony is already on the ball with that end of things.

I can't believe this thing was only $600. It's too high tech and high end to be considered "just a game console" because it cleary is not.

Easily the best build quality I've ever seen on any "game console."

It's slick, clean, futuristic to the point that there's no physical buttons on it. The eject and power buttons are actually touch sensitive areas.

As someone who owned the 360 for a year, it's already painfully obvious to me that the 360 is being left in the dust hardware wise.

More to come...
My best friend has one and it damn amazing, he has no complaints about the ps3!!!!

Gonna pick up a PS3 in the next 3 days or so. Yay - finally get to come over to the Blu side. Anyways quick question, the 40G PS3 doesn't come w/ an HDMI cable right and from what I read Monoprice's cables are top quality, so I should pick one up from them? Thanks.

These are the cables I'm talking about, http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

I have a set of color-coded monoprice HDMI cables (currently running with four sources). I wouldn't call them "top quality". That would be reserved for cables far more expensive. But their build quality is very good, and their prices astounding, and especially for a "digital" cable, that's the two factors that matter the most. I would (and will) buy them again.

Are these improvements part of the Version 2.40 firmware update (currently pulled due to some glitches)? Or did they come in with the recent 2.36 update?
