Default why are almost all blu-ray's widescreen!!!!!!

I cannot understand why most blueray discs are widescreen leaving the dreaded black bars above and below the picture. I recently upgraded my HDTV to a samsung led dlp 61" and every time I rent a stinkin blue ray I am only using about 2/3 of my screen realestate. This is even more maddening since everyone watching a blueray movie already HAS A WIDESCREEN (16 X 9) TELEVISION.

Can anyone please explain this nonsense to me....is there a fix??

thank you

who knew I would get all the nerds fired up with this question. Thanks for pointing me to the right thread. I suppose I should now list all of the audio/visual equipment I have. Fortunately, I have been laid in the last 5 years so I will skip it.

Not only do I have black bars, but when I set up my six speaker system, I don’t get consistent sound at all. Most of the sound just comes out of the center speaker in the front – NOTHING at all from the other five speakers. Then, occasionally, there’s a sound from the rear speakers for a few seconds and then it completely stops. I spent a thousand dollars on those 6 speakers and most of the time sound is only coming out of one of them. What a waste!

With the black bar problem and the inconsistent sounds from the speakers, I must conclude that this “home theater” experience is nothing but a complete joke and a total waste of my money. I’m selling it all and going back to my $50 dvd player and my 2 small speakers which work ALL the time!

Since sarcasm is lost on some people, and the way it's going, this thread will die a quick death.

Just ignore it and it'll all go away . . . and after his last response, the OP may enjoy a little hiatus.

You ask a question here and you got directed in the right direction and you're calling the posters "nerds", pretty lame.

Funny how anyone who tends to know an answer is a nerd nowadays by those w/ the questions

on "nerds"
