It is different than other catalog titles on Blu. We aren't talking about a bad transfer with DNR/EE/Banding. We're talking about an encode with some compression problems. Is it unwatchable? Not by any stretch of the imagination.

It would be more like comparing the same transfer used by two difference companies. Like, "Lifeforce" from Shout and "Lifeforce" from Arrow. Same transfer, different encodes. The only difference is that artifacts were introduced in this new TT encode that did not exist in the original along with an increase in brightness. While I know the artifacts are wrong, I'm just 95% convinced that the brightness increase is wrong.

But, are either a huge deal? I don't think so. I honestly don't know how often the artifacts pop up beyond the 5 cases I've seen so far. But, it's a frame or two long "jump" that many may not notice. If you blink, you will miss it. I think some people in this thread just might blink a lot more than others.
pretty much... I have the new release and thinks it looks quite good. the errors weren't even a big deal to most people on here until it exploded into a "TT needs to teach these stupid consumers who's boss" and "TT is being like a jackass to the consumers!!" argument. the transfer is different than the first one, and both have their pro's and cons' but neither encode is BAD in any way shape or form

I don't really ever notice compression issues that get brought up in these threads (I guess for once, poor eye sight is a good thing). The people going round and round with TT are just going to waste their time, though. If it bothers them that much, they could just return this release and import one of the foreign releases.

Your post sums up my feelings on this issue perfectly.

I see screen caps as a tool useful for a cursory indicator of an improvement, but it does not give a complete picture of what one is going to see from watching it in motion from the seated position and that is what matters to me in the end. I watch a sizable amount of discs and rarely take issue with what I am seeing, because I am watching the film.
I took pause with this release because I have watched and own the original release and it is free of these issues, however minor or irrelevant they may appear.
On my setup, we are talking about an image projected over seven feet wide, so while looking at screen caps and watching on smaller screens show these imperfections, they are not showing what bothered me personally.
While brief, we are talking about an artifact that is maybe three or two feet big, I do not have to look for an issue at that size, it jumps out at you.
and the reason it jumped out at me is because the first release was free of these issues.

There are many more areas affected than the ones I mentioned, for instance there is one starting around 1.11.48 - Sarandon walking towards Bearse before he bites her - wall behind Sarandon above his shoulder.
I could post examples all day long, but my intent was never to drag this release through the mud and I have no ill will towards TT, I like what they are doing and own many of their titles.
This was just one release I was disappointed in because I expected the new release to be a issue free clone of the first one.
One does not buy a film they already own for thirty five dollars for the sole intention of attacking it, idiotic logic in the extreme.

There are plenty of releases that feature far more offending issues to me than this, but I posted my findings because I knew some would be interested and I knew some would ignore it, at least the information is out there.

I have been into home theater as a hobby for well over twenty years and I do not proclaim to know everything, hence why I am a member here - to learn and share information on Blu-rays in a Blu-ray forum - imagine that!

Some of the compression blocks are almost as large a foot ball near Ed's face and over his jacket.
Are you the same user who used to have an account named Genesim? Serious question.

If quality does suffer in future releases, there are options even if not so good. Fox didn't spend all that money on 4k for JTTCOTE just for a TT release and Fright Night (including 30th Anniversary version), Christine, and others have/probably will become available through others.
If the studio is aware TT is degrading their work with inferior authoring processes, maybe the studio will look elsewhere when leasing out their premo 4K scans? WE can only hope.

BTW why did they go to this inferior option? $$$?

TT can most certainly raise prices if it must to keep quality as it has been in the past. The fact FN and others sell out so quickly proves that, and I am willing to pay a bit more for quality rather than less quality at a lower price if that what is needed.

Now if the quality is going to change in the wrong direction, that is a different animal and maybe I would therefore want to pay less.

Rather see TT raise prices a bit, rather than see quality do down.
Yes but there shouldn't be any need for them to raise prices, except to make MORE money. The cost is already high enough.

BTW I have bought 96 TT BD disks THUS FAR....

I agree. I just watched it on my OLED and didn't even notice it. I've sat through film in the theater, and paid ridiculous prices, and in the end saw prints in horrible condition. I still remember seeing a print of MASTER AND COMMMANDER that faded and most green, and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA faded and almost sepia - when I finally watched both upon their DVD first time release I couldn't believe the improvement.

I just turned up the saturation on the color 3 point for FRIGHT NIGHT and still can't believe how good this release is - there is most detail in the picture than I ever have seen - and I saw it in the theater upon original release.

For those not happy and do have a German BD release up for sale.

I don't think the change was directly related to money but rather was linked to a specific person.

That's an interesting observation but there is something else I've noticed. Other than some of the very early TT releases, Jeff Jewett was credited from 1k Studios but with the newest releases he's still credited but from Ambient Digital Media. It looks like Jeff took a new job at Ambient in August 2014 and TT simply followed him. It would appear TT wanted to stay with Jeff's services thus TT's change has more to do with loyalty then money.

EDIT: Looks like the credit changed to Ambient as of the September releases as the August releases still credited 1k Studios.

That makes sense.

Also I noticed Salvador is credited to 1K while La Bamba is credited to Ambient. Both Sept. 2014 release.

Most likely Salvador, along with the August releases, was already completed by 1k Studios before the change took effect.

Just to follow up, I received a replacement clear case in the mail from Screen Archives today, so they must have gotten them in stock.

If anyone else received a damaged case, you might want to give them a call now.

I think that's an excellent review, accurate, more than fair, and with a little bit of humor for the "perfectionists" that are roaming this thread...

Solid summary. Brief less-than-a-second-long macroblocking in two or three scenes but also a bit more detail and grain. Pick your poison.
