PS3 which audio output

Dolby TrueHD is automatically decoded in the PS3 and then is transmitted over HDMI as PCM. So basically if you want the HD audio, all you need is a receiver that can accept multi-channel PCM over HDMI. However, one thing worth noting. There is no DTS MA decoding for the PS3 nor is there a way to transmit that audio track over HDMI. So if in the future the PS3 has the ability to decode it onboard then it will probably transmit it over PCM as well. If it in the future has the ability to transmit the DTS MA track over HDMI you would need a receiver and a v1.3 compliant HDMI cable to transmit and decode it from the PS3.

Cheers zaphod, That expanation helped me. I,ll have to check out a high quality reciever to do this. As I am into superior audio sound (Atmasphere valve amps & Genesis ones speakers ) my Theta Casablanca does not have HDMI inputs so what is available out there that offers this sort of high quality sound.

Currently, the Onkyo 805 is the best one out now. But if you are concerned with upscalling and upconverting analog video, then you might want to wait for the 875 which will have the Reon proccessor, or even later for the 905 which will have ethernet and all sorts of other goodies. But right now, even at CC, you can get the 805 for as low as $899. It has 3 HDMI (1.3a) in, and one out. It is also THX Ultra 2 certified. I have it, and love it. Works great with both the PS3 and the new S300.
