THE MARTIAN on MGO in HDR review

So I watched "The Martian" in HDR on MGO last night.

It was truly impressive. To be honest im quite shocked that such a greatly graded HDR movie came out of fox. Their earlier stuff was just flat out not that impressive and hardly looked HDR at all, giving HDR a very bad name early on.

The colors in The Martian are just simply gorgeous. The Orange on the suites and the surface of the red planet are great. In the wide shots on the red planet, the texture grading of the mountains looks incredible, never seen such a 3D looking picture before. You really do have to see it to understand.

I also find it hilarious with the people complaining that the martian is a 2k master source because watching this movie you would never know it. It looks native 4k in so many shots, particularly the outdoor shots. Theres so much detail in the space suites that benefit and just jump out at you its crazy. If the UHD blu ray looks better than this internet download, i will for sure double dip because I really enjoyed it despite being 2.5 hours long.

This stuff is just in a different league than blu ray. the colors, the depth, the detail, its really unreal coming from an LCD.

By the way, flipping through the dynamic contrast setting, I used HIGH because this movie was graded properly to where nothing blows out. this issue of blow out seems to be a major issue on amazon only.

I think only on the most extreme home cinemas would you really notice the source's lack of resolution (assuming they are using a 2K master).

I have seen this in HDR in the cinema and it did look pretty damn good.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on this title Ray, definitely waiting patiently for the UHD BD. Bet this will also come with Atmos which the standard 2D/3D appears to be lacking.

Time will tell, fox may still go DTS for titles, but I doubt it
