What?! Tomb Raider is the female version of Indiana Jones. You're saying those movies were super deep, full of character development, and no one liners? You're saying they weren't absurd? Regardless, they were fun and endearing.
If we get a gritty reboot of TR a la TDK, I'll be way less interested, although I fear that's what we'll end up with, specifically born out of the desire to overcompensate for the fact that TR is indeed based on a video game. I still haven't watched the original because I can't stand Angelina Jolie's lips... ![]() |

I really don't like the direction they took the latest tomb raider games. Gritty and realistic isn't what I want from that series, why does every game franchise have to become more like every other game franchise.... I miss the dumb fun adventure of the old stuff. Even Lara Croft's design was more fun. Now they want to make it deep? Ugh.. End rant.

I think the older stuff is pretty memorable ( which is why they could reboot it and bank off them ), and the new one may indeed be great on it's own, I just wish they made it a different franchise instead of contorting a great old one into that.
To me it's as bad as like... taking Crash Bandicoot and turning him from a wacky animal into a marine in yet another military shooter. |

Silent 1+2+3 Killer7 I could punch the hacks that did the Silent Hill movies in the face. The first one at least somewhat got the looks right. But the second one, omg. Wtf. What the hell were they doing. it's not like those games already have a great story and properly developed characters and a world and rules. No, let's rename this and that and change this and that and put this monster into there, although that makes no sense and then change the main character to the mother, because a father isn't able to love his child, but still splice in scenes w/ the father in there at random to make the studio happy. And also **** around with the story, because why not. Hell, even Resident Evil series had at least great characters. And what did those hacks do? Create a blank slate as main character and put a few of those RE characters in there at random, but only by name and sometimes also looks only. And of course kill almost all of them within 1 movie and when you do that, then do it in the lamest and most stupid way possible. Paul W. S. Anderson - go .. away, you flipping hack. Quote:
The original Tomb Raider's combat sucked. Why didn't it matter? Because the game wasn't about combat, but about exploration and that was superb. It nailed that part. And the controls were actually great. They were precise. The player had to know what he/she was doing and not this semi-automatic climbing Uncharted-BS. And you also didn't kill thousands of humans. The Anniversary Edition even improved that part, because in it you kill I think 1 human in total? And Lara is actually shocked by it. And it happens in a QTE-cutscene. Oh wait, yeah QTEs suck too. They can shove those games where the sun doesn't shine. If only Core Design would still be alive. Last edited by jimidini; 03-06-2016 at 09:20 PM. |

TR has never been known for it's character development or story. Just the game with the hot lady and big boobs. Now it's actually known for it's story and character development and not just a sex joke. |

There's nothing wrong with Lara Croft being a cartoony big breasted woman with a weird looking face. It was hilarious back in the day. It was relatively light hearted. Yes there's a problem with games, but I don't think the solution is to hijack Lara Croft and overwrite that character. The answer is to actually create more original quality female characters.
They took a fun, iconic character and just slapped grittiness and realism onto it like every other game... and don't think for a second that they aren't still pandering to a certain group, the new Lara Croft is still a supermodel. |

I played Tomb Raider 1 on PC back then when it was released. Can't remember anyone actually going "boobs!!!". Those were basically 2 triangles anyway. People were excited to basically play an Indiana Jones-like game. To have full 3D movement in a 3D world. To explore the levels. Lara Croft was independent back then, she didn't take orders. Her original design was not sexist at all. Her design was not photo-realistic, but rather cartoony, still no one cared about that. And she was an icon. She was everywhere. This also shows that the claim "male gamers are sexist" is BS. Otherwise Tomb Raider wouldn't have been such a huge success back then. The Indiana Jones games back then were point+click adventure games (well except for 1 3D one, but that was pretty terrible and was released 1999, so way after Tomb Raider was released, I'm sure they actually developed it because of Tomb Raider games). Back then Core Design actually wanted to use a male character first, but then later changed it to female. Quote:
Of course her voice "actress" also has to look like some kind of super model. Just like that sniper super model in MGS V, that also wears clothing, which doesn't make sense at all except for fan pandering. It was one of the reasons why I never bought it and will never buy it. I find that so disgusting. It's so cheap and what's even worse is that it actually works with a lot of so called gamers nowadays. I hated that crap too in Metroid Other M. Well the ass and tits shots. The "change to Zero suit" every 5 minutes during cutscenes etc. It felt so cheap. No idea what Nintendo were smoking that they gave their IP to Team "boobs" Ninja. Terrible developer. As I said - I would actually be interested in a game, that actually goes the realism route with all of its consequences. But I guess such a game would be called niche and wouldn't have mass-appeal. At least it would be a big risk, so better use established stuff instead. That's why more and more games basically play the same. Back on PS2 there were all sorts of games that played completely different. Where the controls were also completely different. And that's why they felt completely different. The controls were also designed according to the gameplay and not the other way round. Last edited by jimidini; 03-06-2016 at 11:39 PM. |

Speaking as a massive fan of the series who's played all but the latest one (the timed exclusivity left a bad taste in my mouth and killed any potential excitement), I think people ought to revisit the older games if they really think there was little more to them than tits and ass.
I really like the reboot based on its own merits but let's face it, they sold out. They wanted to make the series relevant again (although Underworld had actually performed well and received positive reviews, but whatever) and so they chucked Uncharted and The Descent into a blender. Suddenly everybody's applauding the game for making Lara 'realistic' and 'multi-dimensional,' despite the fact that she's actually fairly bland. Falling over repeatedly does not equal character development. Personally I think The Angel of Darkness still has the best story and characters and would make an excellent film, but people were so hung up on the controls and glitches that they overlooked all the game's good points. |
