It's like 2011, when Jessica Chastain had 5 features released, along with a short and a documentary. It was like every other week, she had something coming out.

IRL couples playing on screen couples is always off-putting to me for some reason.

Derek Cianfrance made an incredible film that will never leave me and then a mediocre one. Lets roll those dice.

I saw a TV spot for this today, and it looks really, really good. I can't wait until it is released in theaters!

It's a beautifully shot movie with terrific performances. It reminded me a little bit of Room although that's a far superior film. My biggest gripe is the epilogue which felt unnecessary. It doesn't undermine the movie, but I don't think it enhances it either.

Also, Fassbender's courting of Vikander's character is somewhat unorthodox since he basically goes out on one date, writes her a letter, and then they're getting married(not really a spoiler as it's within the first act of the film). This was just after WWI, so I suppose that was common back then, especially on an island with few rival suitors. But it may be offputting to some moviegoers.

I'd give it 4 out of 5(or 3 1/2 out of 4 stars).

Probably any day now if its release date is Friday. It's been screening for weeks(I saw it at the beginning of August), but I imagine there's been an embargo.

^ This. If I didn't see a credit at the end of the trailer that it was not only directed by Cianfrance, but adapted for the screen as well, I would've sworn this was a for-hire effort. No sale.

It's been a while since I read the book, but I think the courting is a little more extended than that. Like, multiple encounters, and multiple correspondences too.

I get why it's compressed in the movie. They wanna get to the meat of the story which is after they're married. The film's already around 130 minutes as is. You don't want a 2 1/2 hour flick and be past the one hour mark before the boat washes up on the shore.

Luckily Fassbender and Vikander have very good chemistry(not surprising, since they're a real life couple), so it helps sell the romance despite the courtship being brief and understated.

Feels like she lost her steam, now that I think about it.

But yeah, Alicia is going strong, Dwayne Johnson style.

Which one was better, Room? Man, I hated the second half of that movie...
I think "Lights" isn't going to be strong for its story but rather the performances. Either way, I'm looking forward to it.

I personally preferred Room. Jacob Tremblay blew me away in that movie. The little girl in Light is very good, but pales in comparison to what he did. And none of the adult performances are on the level of Brie Larson's, although the three main actors are all terrific. Rachel Weisz is easily the most sympathetic character. It's heartbreaking what she goes through in the flick. If she does get an Oscar nod, it'll be because of the scene she has with Vikander in the rain.

In one particular way. Both involve a young child who's put through a rough ordeal. In Room, Jack spends his first 5 years in captivity and then is thrust into the real world which he didn't even know existed. In Light Between Oceans, Lucy spends her first 4 years raised by Tom and Isabel and then.....well, see the movie and find out.
