You act like the $60 edition is the only one. The real question is whether you want to pay $20 for a new master and new supplements, which I certainly would. However I have learned that despite this being an enthusiast forum a ton of people here don't actually care about picture quality or supplements, so posts like yours are not surprising.

If Scream Factory was also doing the second one I would pick both of them up.

However, since that is not happening, I'll just pick up the box set at some point soon.

It's just a matter of time before they announce 2 and 3.

New supplements yes, as far as picture quality, I still watch vhs. I have a 55 inch and only buy blu ray currently, but there are things that have not been released on bluray yet so I have to settle for less(Hide and go Shriek, Sandford and Son dvd collection etc..). Yeah, I'll buy a blu ray over and over if the extras are worth it, but from the looks of it, the extras aren't worth another buy. Plus how much better than this bluray be over the last one? I'm not that picky.

All extras have not been announced yet. This is a 2-disc edition with the second disc's contents currently unannounced, so I'm assuming it'll be pretty jam-packed & definitive as far as extras go.

My fingers are still crossed that they give the same treatment to 2 & 3.

I'm glad I held out as I didn't find out a good deal of the boxset. I purchased part 1 years ago just about right after it was released. Now gonna wait and see what Scream does with this (these).

A bit off topic but does anyone know why MGM sold the CP franchise to Universal? I thought the original CP did pretty well at the box office? I know a lot of people thought the series starts to go downhill starting with Bride. I thought the same however, after watching CP 2 again recently I think that's when the series starts to lose its quality. The original is scary, dark and has creepy/ scary music and setting in a dark old apartment building that makes it a true horror film. But the deaths in CP 2 seem silly (technician getting doll eyes, Ms Kettlewell death scene, the electricution scene and Phil's "How's it hanging Phil?" Death). Even the music during Ms Kettlewell's death sounds like carnival music and the electricution scene music is not at all scary. CP 3 starts off with creepy setting and ominous music with the doll factory, resurrection scene and the creepy scene of Sullivan alone with Chucky. The part showing Chucky's box empty with the terrifying music score is especially effective. However, it goes downhill from there. The barber's death and the garbage man's deaths are silly although the ending is effective in the carnival with some creepy settings and Chucky's severed face. But overall the film is still not scary. Curse does not have the awesome resurrection scenes found in CP 2 and 3 and the way it ends does not seem to indicate there would be a resurrection scene either. The fact it acknowledges Bride and Seed kind of kills the horror in it. Anyone else thinks CP stops being scary at 2 and maybe the series would have been better if it was left with MGM? I know Don Mancini wrote the script but maybe the studio execs had a say on what the film should be like?

Here's a 1989 article explaining UA's decision to sell the Child's Play franchise:

Here's a glimpse of the United Artists exec who made that decision:

Thanks for the article. That's a strange reason to ditch the franchise. I wonder if the Child's Play 2 would have been the same if it remained at UA.

"We have to have Morals..." Was probably said, and is ridiculous way to disassociate a money making property.

That new exec didn't have a job for very long.

I mean, if you don't really care about picture quality then we have such different priorities we're obviously never going to agree on the worth of a re-release. I still watch DVD and old masters when I have to, obviously, but I am very interested in improved picture quality.

Well if it's like Return of the Living Dead extras, then I'm all in.

I only bought this franchise once...on DVD. Never pulled the trigger on the Blu-ray box set, but glad I didn't. I'll happily pick up this Shout edition of the first film (I've only seen the first two anyway) and go from there and see how they handle the rest of the franchise. 2 and 3 are probably assured, but I wonder if they'll do Bride and Seed, can't really see them touching Curse. I want the Good Guys slipcover and the NECA figure, they're cool, but I don't think I need them. It's also hard to empty $60 + shipping on one movie when there's so many awesome releases ahead, particularly for horror, so I'll likely go with the standard edition.

One already exists. One new commentary track is not enough of a reason to double dip.

It's probably gonna be a lot more than that. The Thing collectors edition only listed a couple of new things and a lot of the old stuff ported over. Then later they announce a whole slew of new extras. I think it'll be the same for this release. They basically told us all the old extras are being ported over and a couple new things. Probably by the end of the month/early next month they will list all of the new extras.

Again, this is a 2-disc Collector's Edition and Shout's new bonus features have not been announced yet aside from the commentary. The only other thing that's currently known is that the bonus features from the previous release will indeed carry over. From their website:

Additional extras in progress and will be announced at a later date.

Given the scandal in the UK, they had a lucky escape!
