my DVI/VGA to VGA looks perfectly fine also, but shouldnt my DVI/HDMI to HDMI on the same monitor look better, not worse?

I use DVI to VGA and it looks great. Let us know if you solve the issue with DVI to HDMI. I would suggest experimenting with all of the settings for your video card to see if you find something that improves it.
