Neither can I, but my enthusiasm is tempered with the knowledge that the story of E Company, 506th PIR is probably the most intriguing of any American story in WWII. I doubt they'll be able to top it.

You're probably right. Hollywood definitely prefers cranking out the European front movies, but very few Pacific movies have been released in the last 30 years. Flags of our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, and Thin Red Line are the only "recent" ones i can think of. It would be hard to top BoB, but there was some crazy action in the pacific theater during WWII as well: Midway, the battle of Guadalcanal, all the Jima's. |

Band of Brothers has some things going for it and some not:
1. It's well acted, largely historically accurate and based on a true story . The book is highly recommended. 2. Battles are shot in the same jerky Robert Capa-esque fashion as SPR - deliberately sped up and choppy. 3. It's very episodic. Some episodes feel padded out to slice them up into neat parcels. 4. Some of the effects are extremely cheap looking. The parachute drop over Normandy is the worst. 5. Battles are less well choreographed than Saving Private Ryan and a certain amount of "battle fatigue" might set in as the Capa style photography becomes a little bit tiresome. I don't think it's an either / or situation. Buy both, assuming SPR appears some day in HD. Last edited by DrXym; 11-19-2008 at 01:23 PM. |
