That also can depend on if it sold out due to everyone who purchased them actually wanting to own the title or if it was scalpers who wanted to sell them at a higher price as it was in the beginning of TT.

Folks, I think five and a half pages of discussion and speculation on Twilight Time's business model, health, and relation to the home video market is enough to satisfy the most ardent horse-beater on this often repeated topic.

The post from yesterday evening and TT's recent sales have led to a flare up that has been absent in this thread for many months. These things frequently never end well and have in the past lead to arguments, label bashing, and thread derailing. I want to thank you for being civil to each other and not engaging in any of the past behaviors or other negativity.


So I would like to share with you (with TT's permission) a private communication to me directly addressing the last half dozen pages of speculation.

From Twilight Time:
.....[the] speculation about TT's future based on one out of context post taken from a site -- it would be a full time job to keep correcting all of these misinterpretations, but suffice to say, we are still here and going strong -- this misinformation about going to limited editions of 1,500 started at another site a couple of years ago and never goes away -- but if the readers would only look at the packaging they would know we have never done it -- and have no plans to do so in the foreseeable future. The reality is 2020 *is* being regarded by many companies in the industry as a make or break time, with the across-the-board decline in sales nationwide a factor in determining whether physical media will be viable beyond that point .....

Please let this be the last word on this topic and give it a break. Any further discussions based on last evening's post directly concerning TT as a company, their longevity in the market, or inferring their status from recent sales, or member opinions about changing their business model, will be removed from this point forward. No exceptions.

Thanks for your understanding and please let's move on. There is much to celebrate. Twilight Time will be with us for a good while bringing us classic flicks on Blu-ray, as they have done for the past six years. And their lineup so far in 2017, as with 2016 and years past, is a marvelous gift to film fans everywhere. There are some real gems from the 1940s through the 1980s already released and coming to us soon that deserve recognition....and for those unfamiliar with these titles, some exploration and willingness to expand self-imposed boundaries will reap big rewards. Ain't it a wonderful thing!

If I may be so bold, what is it about the discussion of TT's sales that is so bad that it needs to be shut down. I may have missed it, but I didn't see any posts that were derogatory or demeaning. Seems that most comments were coming from a place of concern over the health of the company. Most commenters probably have supported TT with many purchases over the years and hope to continue to do so.

I think I addressed all this in my post above. And you are not seeing the posts that were borderline derogatory or outright insulting because they were removed (there were only a few). As I said, pages and pages of speculation on something that isn't true is enough. The support and concern for TT is noted and much appreciated by them. Again, please understand and let's move on to other topics.

I can't believe that I can own a wonderful classic movie for $20-00 - $30-00 and have it available to view over and over again.

I once paid Aus$110-00 to purchase a VHS copy of Casablanca, now I own it on a beautifully restored Blu Ray version.

I love that Twilight Time, Kino, Criterion, Arrow and Eureka etc. exist and continually distribute movies from some of my favourite genres, Film Noir & Classic Hollywood movies.

Now recently retired I can sit back with a glass of wine and enjoy my favourite movies in the quiet, privacy of my own company.

As long as they keep making Blu-ray players after that point in time, I'll be fine.

If not, then I may want to hoard a few different Blu-ray players in my closet.

that was always my plan if physical media goes away, I'll buy 3 or 4 Sony/Samsung players and keep them in the box in my garage to use if/when needed.....

Ordered Wednesday night from the TT store and received my order today . About the current discussion, maybe TT needs to cut their output a bit as far as the amount of titles released per month. I believe Nick and the TT team will find a way to make a profit and remain viable.

If physical media does, indeed, die in 2020 and companies stop pressing Blu-rays, then my plan is to accrue enough still-unwatched Blu-rays before then so that they'll keep me busy for the rest of my life.

I should add that I'm doing a pretty awesome job of that so far anyway.

Yeah but there's still plenty that aren't released yet that I want that will hopefully get released before 2020. I don't want to have to settle for the lesser dvds and/or instant video for those titles.

They've been predicting its demise for years. It's not going anywhere and anyway they just released UHD BD last year. The market will obviously continue to decline, but the decline is not that steep, and percentage-wise, it's a linear decline. New theatrical titles will continue to get released by the major studios and the lessor catalogs will continue to be licensed to 3rd party labels. This gloom and doom about the end of physical in a few years is very pessimistic thinking, IMHO. There will always be enough collectors, HV enthusiasts/videophiles to justify its existence for many many more years.
