A poster of the 1946 version of The Killers can be seen on the wall of the apartment shared by the girls in the new movie, La La Land.

They also have a poster for The Black Cat (1941).

Ok, La La Land, is it a musical or what? The trailer looks cool but if it's a full blown musical I'll pass.

After watching the other night, I could honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the film. I am not a fan of musicals myself and it was not too full-blown to me. The plot and visuals, such as homages to older films, the posters on the wall mentioned above and a few noir-esque scenes, were enough for me to forget that I was watching a musical.

While not a blu-ray release, it's worth mentioning that Film Chest will be releasing a complete series set of the groundbreaking 1950s TV show Decoy. Hopefully, the quality will be good.

Here's some info from the press release and the TVshowsonDVD site:

Quote:
Based on a variety of factual cases tackling controversial subjects, the Decoy series was a significant marker in television history, undeniably ahead of its time. Initially aired on October 14,1957, it was the first show to film on location in New York City and the first to feature a policewoman as its main character. The series also had high production value in terms of its film noir look and fully developed characters.

The talented and stunning Beverly Garland steals the show as the no-nonsense and uncompromising female crime fighter, Casey Jones, sharing the screen with a variety of up-and-coming talent such as Peter Falk, Larry Hagman, Martin Balsam, and Suzanne Pleshette.

The Film Chest Media Group is releasing Decoy - The Complete 39 Episode Series on DVD this May 30th. Complete for the first time on DVD (previous public domain releases didn't have all 39 episodes), it will cost $19.98 SRP. It comes with closed captioning, plus a 16-page Episode Libretto that includes an extended synopsis, trivia, historical information, and synopses of each episode.

It's been a while since I've watched a Noir.

I'm waiting for July's Criterion sale so I can finally pick up Mildred Pierce and Asphalt Jungle. Although, I could have sworn there was a third Criterion Noir that just recently came out...

Maybe you were just thinking of their upcoming release of They Live By Night?

I just watched the neo noir "COP" for the first time and I have to say that I was disappointed with what I saw.

First, I want to say that James Woods gave a hellva performance. He makes the obsessions of his character seem very real. I really enjoy his cynical at best and nihilist at worst character, but it's hard to totally buy into his obsession because the case doesn't seem all that interesting. The film start's off with Woods character telling his daughter about his criminal cases and such. That was unexpected and I thought this would go in really interesting directions. After that, the story is simply formula. Formula can be interesting and entertaining if done right, but Hopkins outsmarts his enemies at nearly every turn.

The ending was really deflating. It was so sudden and unrewarding because we barely even see the bad guy or know anything about him. It's just like This guy was horrible and he got dealt with. The end.... There just isn't any intensity, atmosphere or anything.

Two out of 5 stars is the best I can give this on first viewing.

I agree with you about the film's rushed ending.

James Ellroy's book, BLOOD ON THE MOON, went on another 30 pages or so and was much more explicit than the film was allowed to be.

I felt the same exact way my first viewing. It improved greatly on repeat viewings with me though (even though I still find it a little flawed). I do disagree with you on the climax though. I always loved it and I think the final shot (no pun intended) of the film is one of the best in film history. The late great Roger Ebert put it best stating "James Woods ends the book and slams it shut in that final shot".

I agree it's flawed, I agree it's gotten better the more I've seen it, and I really agree that the final shot was great. It's one of those films that could've been better, but James Woods performance (as is often the case) really elevates the film and make me overlook any flaws

If the drama beforehand was more interesting I think I would've been able to accept the ending more.

I know the guy is supposed to be a serial killer and so we're supposed to hate him just for that, but the film focuses so much on Woods character that the rest if the cast just gets the short end of the stick. There is sort of a detachment from all of the events that has taken place.

Yeah that's where I found it flawed in some places but for me the film was pretty much about Woods. Not so much about the case. I don't know much about the book though either.

I did, but it's normal for Amazon UK deliveries to take a few weeks. I just sort of order them, and then assume that they'll get to me when they get to me.

Two days ago, I received my Indicator Blu-rays of Happy Birthday to Me, 10 Rillington Place, and Body Double. I'm a happy man.

Hello all.

Frequent lurker on the boards, very, very non-frequent poster. I would like to take advantage of the current Deep Discount BOGO sale on Olive discs. I only own a couple of these discs (Cry Vengeance, Cry Danger, The Big Combo) and currently have my cart filled with, oh...about 30 titles... So, obviously, I'd like to knock that number down to a more reasonable amount! Maybe a dozen or so. So - can you all recommend some of your favorite Olive noir discs, besides the three that I own? All responses are certainly appreciated!!!

"Cry Danger" and "The City That Never Sleeps" are a couple of other good ones from Olive. "Cry Vengeance" is decent as well.
