Exactly. There is nothing whatsoever in this film that denies or voids the events of PREDATOR 2, so I view it as the third of a trilogy.

Watched this last night and holy crap would it be great in HDR. I really hope we get a UHD when The Predator comes out next year.

I agree. My only major beefs with this film was Brody as a tough guy (too scrawny) and the fact the Spetnaz guy had an American mini-gun. I can't really blame Rodriguez for the mini-gun though because they tried to get the Russian equivalent and couldn't get one.

The yakuza/yautja sword fight is one of my favorite Predator moments. I really like the score as well

The score is excellent because it's reminiscent of the first film.

Agreed. I totally coincidentally watched this two night ago again and I think it's... fine. I have no problem with any individual element. I like Adrian Brody in it. I wish Danny Trejo had a bigger part. But the music. I threw the original 2007 (?) blu release of Predator in after and when that music kicks in... I thought 'Man, this is what I really wanted and probably should've just watched it again for the 25th time."

Exactly. I also liked how they incorporated the original predator design

Watched this for the first time since its release 7 years ago. I really disliked it then and nothing has changed. One of the great things about the first was the creature was hidden the whole movie until its fantastic reveal at the end. Now we know what they look like they lose a lot of their malevolence. Thats not Predators fault but it does little to return them to the unstoppable killing machine from the original. It even does the face palming "friendly Predator" thing.

I remember reading a fair bit at the time about the new creatures that would appear in the movie. Well they amount to little more than a couple of Resident Evil castaways. Brody is a fine actor but totally miscast. Special ops hard nut? Nope, not buying it. The dialogue is awful. The score and sound is pretty good but only because it copies the original.

I'm also fed up with every Predator movie feeling the need to have a different alien design. The original Winston creation is just as effective as it was then. It doesn't need to keep being altered just for the sake of it. i'm sure The Predator will do the same next year.

As mentioned thought he worst part was making the Predators less threatening. The original wiped out a whole platoon of badasses and yet three cant kill and old man and two guys with no guns. OK I get that these were probably young Predators but whatever.

4/10

I liked it, but I can definitely agree with any criticisms with it. Looking forward to the next on though.

If you compare it to the original you'll be disappointed, but as a sci-fi action movie I think it's wayyyyy above a 4/10. It's a fun movie.

I thought Predators was mostly mediocre, certainly entertaining and competent enough not to annoy me, but the actor they cast as the villain was a joke. It's one of the few instances where I think misguided casting really hurt a movie (much like the villain role in Eastwood's Blood Work).

Totally agree. This movies main problem, just like every JJ Abrams movie, was it's third act and a lot of it had to do with the casting of Eric Foreman. He ruined this movie just like he helped ruin Spider-Man 3

With the release of the upcoming fourth film, I wonder how this film will fit in the universe and if it will ever be referenced again, since the surviving characters are stuck on the alien planet.

I want to see Dutch at least make a cameo somehow.

I finally watched this again after about 11 years and still give it a 3/5. Maybe a 2.5/5 the more I think about it.

Pros:

The Predators looked very cool/bad ass
The Score. They should have utilized it more. I found myself more involved every time it played.
The Opening. Great way to open an action movie.
Adrian Brody was way better then I gave him credit for. He was a strange choice for a lead but he brought it. Kinda like Danny Glover in part 2, strange choice but delivered.
Had some great action scenes

Mehs:

Jungle setting.
Some characters were just there, take em or leave em.

Cons:

Topher Grace's character. Pointless. Could have easily written around him.
Lawrence Fishburn. Where do I begin? Aside from slowing down the movie he had no reason to be there either. (ok exposition maybe) Poorly written. Also if his character was in the situation he was in, why is he so rotund? He took me right out.
The Ending? What is the audience supposed to feel after what all these people have been through? Weak ending, nothing is resolved.
Long Tall Sally? This really made me shake my head. I get that the song was featured in the first movie but in no way shape or form did it belong here. The song plays as soon as the credits roll but the vibe of the song and the vibe of the previous 2hrs does not match at all. Just use the score for crying out loud it works way better.
There's more but I'll stop here.

It was a decent way to spend a couple hours, especially seeing the Predators doing their thing again. It could have been a bit shorter. I see why it took 11yrs to revisit. Now I need to see the 4th one and see how that goes. Expectations are low.

^^ Predators was far better than The Predator, IMO. Given your thoughts on the former, I think you will be very disappointed with the 4th film. I just watched the original again a week ago (one of my favorites). The newest one feels even more like a missed opportunity after revisiting the original. I'd rather watch AvP than The Predator.

Part 4 gets more fun with repeat viewings and lowered expectations. Far from a great entry, but there is fun to be had. I hated it the first viewing, but being a Pred-head I had to grab the 4K steelbook when I saw it at BB, and am happy I did now that I gave it another try with only the expectation of hating it again. Not a ringing endorsement by any means, but just a heads-up that this might work for others too.
