Here's the truth...

If you watch the original animatics (you have to own the bonus disc that came with the old Jurassic Park 3-pack) you'll see that the T-Rex grabs Tim and Lex's jeep with its jaws and pulls it farther down the road. It's in the storyboards, too. They just never got around to completing those shots, for whatever reason.
