Blind bought Double Indemnity & Sunset Boulevard. Watched Double Indemnity twice. I thought it was great. Sunset Blvd will probably not stay in my collection. It was fine but I don't see myself desiring to watch it again.

DVDBeaver has its review of The Woman in the Window up. I've been holding off seeing this flick waiting for it to be released on blu-ray. Very excited, especially after just seeing Scarlet Street for the first time recently and being completely blown away by it.

I blind bought Double Indemnity last year and absolutely love it. One of the top best film noirs ever made along with one of the best blind buys I've ever made.

I'll probably be blind buying more from now on. Double Indemnity will be hard to top for sure.

Both films are great, but I'll give the nod to Sunset Boulevard in terms of replay value. Sunset Boulevard is a well-crafted, masterfully layered film that just begs for repeat viewings, moreso than Double Indemnity imo. If I seen these 2 posted in the This or That Movie Game thread & I were to respond, I'd go with SB over DI simply based on greater replay value alone. Imo, SB is a masterpiece of filmmaking & one of the the greatest films of all-time, in any genre.

I agree, although I like the story better in Double Indemnity, I find the acting in Sunset Boulevard more captivating and some of the best I've seen from the leads in any film. Both great films

I just placed an order for The Man Who Cheated Himself from Flicker Alley, since they're having a free shipping promotion for this title today.

Quote:
Flicker Alley, the Film Noir Foundation and UCLA Film & Television Archive are proud to present film noir standout The Man Who Cheated Himself in a brand-new Blu-ray/DVD dual-format edition. The brilliant restoration work and in-depth supplementary materials mark this release as the prime suspect to pursue.

Blinded by love, homicide lieutenant Ed Cullen (Lee J. Cobb, fresh off originating the role of Willy Loman on Broadway in Death of a Salesman) goes to great lengths to cover up a murder. His coquettish girlfriend Lois (Jane Wyatt, best known as the mother in Father Knows Best) has killed her scheming husband before he could bump her off. John Dall (Gun Crazy) co-stars as Ed’s kid brother Andy, a rookie on the force who is determined to break his first big case. These accomplished actors are nearly eclipsed by the incandescent star power of San Francisco and especially the world’s most photographed bridge, the Golden Gate.

In the hard-boiled film noir tradition, reminiscent of the work of James M. Cain, greed, unstoppable sexual attraction, and betrayal set off a doomed course in which a femme fatale leads a once upstanding citizen down a dark path. The first independent production of Phoenix Films, the company run by Jack M. Warner, son of Warner Bros. Studios mogul Jack L., and a highlight in the lengthy career of director Felix E. Feist (Deluge), The Man Who Cheated Himself "goes all the way".

Flicker Alley is excited to present this world-premiere Blu-ray/DVD dual-format edition of The Man Who Cheated Himself, restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive, with support from the Film Noir Foundation and special thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Charitable Trust (The HFPA Trust). This is the third collaboration between Flicker Alley and the Film Noir Foundation, following the deluxe 2016 home video releases of Too Late for Tears and Woman on the Run—two previously lost highlights of the genre saved from oblivion.

Bonus Materials Include:

“The Man Who Cheated Himself Revisited”: Produced by Steven Smith and the Film Noir Foundation, this mini-documentary offers a behind-the-scenes examination of the film’s original production.
“The Man Who Cheated Himself Locations Then and Now”: City Sleuth (aka Brian Hollins) leads a virtual tour around San Francisco hunting down the many locations used during the production of The Man Who Cheated Himself.
Restored Theatrical Trailer: Brand-new restoration of the original theatrical trailer
Souvenir Booklet: Featuring rare photographs, poster art, original lobby cards, and an essay by the “Czar of Noir” Eddie Muller.

It's on TCM tomorrow night (10pm mountain) for anyone not up for a blind buy.

Just received Sunset Boulevard this week and Double Indemnity is on my Amazon wish list. Both are excellent, I fist saw both of them on TCM which is where I discover most of the film noir I watch.

Is Kino's "Film Noir: The Dark Side of Hollywood" set with five films worth a blind buy? It's only $30 on sale right now on their site, which is a killer deal for five films, and far, far cheaper than buying them individually. I haven't seen any of the films, but I love the genre.

I like the box set. Sudden Fear and Hangmen Also Die have both been subsequently released on Blu-ray by Cohen Media, and it's probably just a matter of time for the other three films, but, if you don't want to wait around for the possible, then this DVD set is a go.

Keep in mind that the PQ is pretty bad though. I would pass even at that price if I were you.

The older DVD edition of Sudden Fear in this set is unwatchable.

By the way, I can't find a link to this set on the site anywhere. Does anyone have it?

We might be talking about two different sets. This is on Blu-ray (2016 release), and has Big House USA, A Bullet for Joey, He Ran All the Way, Storm Fear, and Witness to Murder. The reviews on this site do appear to give the PQ "watchable" scores for each film (3/5, 3/5, 3.5/5, 4/5, 4/5). The one I'm most interested in is He Ran All the Way, since it has John Garfield.

EDIT: It looks like I got the title slightly wrong and referenced this set by mistake. Sorry for the confusion: https://www.amazon.com/Film-Noir-Hol...e+of+hollywood

Would it be a safe bet that this will be coming out from Arrow in the UK (like Woman on the Run and Too Late for Tears)? There was some reason I got the Arrow releases of those two instead of the Flicker Alley ones, but I can't remember what it was.

The Arrow and Flicker Alley versions of Woman on the Run and Too Late For Tears are the exact same disc. Only the covers are different. I generally don't care for the BBFC stickers, so I picked Flicker Alley's versions.
