True, but those people probably shouldn't be looking into this player in the first place. $700 is a lot of money to drop if you have poor credit and might not be the best player option.
When you say “true universal player” in reference to the Pio vs the X800, what are the differences exactly? (Only as far as universal player goes)

I got the X800 in August 2017 and so far don’t have any discs that won’t play other than Region locked DVD and BDs which I have an Orei for.

Mainly in that it plays DVD-A as well as SACD. The X800 only does the latter, I believe.

The X800 does both (DVD-Audio and SACD)

Pretty much what other members have said already. The LX500 and the LX800 players can play SACDs and DVD-A discs and also high res audio files. The X800 can play SACDs and DVD-A but not high res audio files nor can it decode DV. The Panasonic 820 and 9000 can't play SACDs and DVD-A discs but can decode high res audio files. Confusing for sure.

I'm debating whether to get the LX500 or the UB9000. I just sent out a message to Pioneer asking them if they plan on releasing a firmware update in regards to HDR10+. If they respond that they will I'll get the Pioneer.

According to Sony, the X800 can play hi res...

No DV though

The Sony X800 is a true universal 4K BR player, not only from all physical discs but also all main hi-res audio files formats. And of course streaming videos and music...apps.

"Audio file compatibility is impressive. The UBP-X800 plays 24-bit FLAC and DSD up to 11.2MHz, as well as WAV, AAC, MP3, APE and Ogg."

Like the Pioneer LX500 it too has reinforced construction that adds heft.
It is more compact, which I like, but not compact like the Sony 700, which I like much less design wise.

The LX500 is attractive aesthetically externally, it inspires confidence.
The internals are normal fare, nothing special jumping out of the box.
But some care was surely added like the 6-layer circuit board.

Reviews should start to appear soon, with measurements for both video and audio.
I would put it in the level of the Oppo 203 build wise. Some features are missing though from the 203, and the price is $450 higher.
If Universal is not a priority, like you already have a universal player that can play all discs, I prefer more what I see from the Panasonic 9000, which is the same price.

Anyway we'll have to wait after Halloween to count all our candies and read the reviews of the LX500.
The Panasonic 9000 too. Comparisons are always good, more so when the prices are similarly the same.

I don't understand why there is no review of the 500 yet. Stores and review sites in Australia have had test units already. One store with a prepro unit sent there's back already after a pitiful superficial glance at it. Just pathetic.

Yes the first looks are usually quickly put together sales pitches to hype a product, the magazines require 60 to 90 days to get a review out there, and the BDP-LX500 is quite new. However videos appear faster

All the Japanese Videos are about 1 month old and it was available in Japan before anywhere else for critiques.

I'll be doing a side-by-side comparison of the UB9000 vs. the UDP-LX500 when our LX500 allocation arrive in two weeks.

Technical measurements, test pattern charts, visual and audio human perception and the player's capabilities and operations as well as the HDR tone mapping image quality and processing results.

All are invited and encouraged to join me.

This is a non issue as long as no studio launches a Blu-ray disc with HDR10+. However in theory HDR10+ Blu-ray movies are coming soon in the future and this is a big negative on the Pioneer. Also there is hardly any flat panel screens on the market that support HDR10+, therefore when the 4K movies with HDR10+ is released the flat panel, Blu-ray player, and any other equipment in the chain like A/V receiver is going to need to support HDR10+.

Ahem, Did you miss the announcement? Mill Creek takes the bow for HDR10+. Read more than the first post.
