Yeah I wish they would do that even if it mean't the player would be limited. An ES model for Sony used to mean great construction and build quality. All it means now is a front display, a few more ports and a detachable power cord.

This is pretty much the same thing they did with the X800 and X1000ES models. Except these players will offer Dolby Vision.

My guess is cost, they don't want to spend much on it now. I don't see this changing soon either.

It's to bad they had some gorgeous players before DVP-S9000ES (DVD player from early 2000's) and the DVP-S5000ES (Blu-ray player from late 2000's).
