This sucks to hear, because I was looking forward to watching it as a film. Is it just the 22 minute episodes stitched together, or is there any new content that bridges it?

It's just the episodes. When they are over they just cut to the title card of the next episode without any sort of transition

So if I haven't watched this before is the anthology version a good way to watch it?
From the comments I take it I'd need to watch the anthology and then the final episode as well? |

Just go ahead and binge the separate episodes in one sitting. The opening and closing credits serve as a nice transition between episodes as they give you a minute to take it all in and get ready for the next story. Plus, if you're planning to buy, the "Series" is slightly cheaper than the movie
