Regarding the DNR discussion, since the opinions seem to differ a lot, could the reason be that the amount of DNR differs per scene?

If so, do those scenes with more/less DNR have anything in common? E.g. is there more or less DNR for scenes with CGI, or scenes that are bright/dark, ...?

It definitely differs scene to scene. It appears DNR has been applied to VFX scenes primarily. I think that is the current consensus.

If that is the case could the reason be that scenes without CGI are native 4K rescanned from 35 mm film, but scenes with CGI are from rescanned 2K filmouts and effectively upscaled to 4K? I.e. the "source material" is worse for scenes with CGI (e.g. less detail and grain)?

Yep, that's exactly it. You should check out the Peter Jackson promo posted here a few pages back.

Post The Lord of the Rings - Differences between Disc 4K and various formats

Seeing that in the main thread a lot of people are reporting Differences between 4K disc and various formats of LOTR, i thought a dedicated thread would make everything more clear. If you have something to report, write down here. To admins, if this isn't ok just delete, it's fine.

Fellowship EE Part 2 iTunes version: (Reported by Piet.)

[Show spoiler]
-Crebain crows when they are heading back to Orthanc. You will hear more cracking sounds and whoosing effects.

More wind effects when they are stuck in the snow, as Saruman tries to cut off their way.

-More falling walls noise after the water creature destroys the door entry.

-Cave troll battle

-Aggressive Balrog roar in rears before they are heading to the bridge

-Horn of Gondor. First it was only in the left surround speaker. Now it's split on both.

Vudu HD & ??? (Reported by wjasoncul)

The goof where Aragorn's bow hits the camera when he says "Into the wild" doesn't seem to be pronounced any more. I watched it several times and didn't see the bump. I just looked at my HDX Vudu copy and it's still there.

2K Blu-Ray (reported by James Freeman)

Moria's Dior fixed
[Show spoiler]

What about scenes with only minor CGI, e.g. only Legolas's blue eyes and no other CGI? Does it look like they've managed to tweak that somehow, so an upscale from the 2K filmouts was not needed (and they could do a native 4K rescan instead)?

Quite nasty looking to be honest, especially in motion. I do watch my films from a distance so it probably doesn't make much difference to me, but a bit disappointing anyway. Nevertheless, I'm happy for HDR and Atmos for my three favourite movies so can't complain.

I honestly couldn't tell while watching. I'm really just regurgitating what others have said and what I've seen from the screenshots posted. I was too engrossed in the spectacle to notice anything that stood out to me.

The camera bump has been on every other format to my knowledge. It's a fun tidbit to me like the Stormtrooper hitting his head in SW Ep IV

An anomaly I noticed while watching Fellowship Extended in 4k was the sound of Gandalf hitting the top of Orthanc after his duel with Saruman was missing. Wondering if anyone else can confirm.

EDIT: I just did a quick cross reference between Itunes and Vudu and the sound effect is missing.

Mine wasn’t supposed to arrive until tomorrow, but it’s out for delivery! Can’t wait to take a look at these (along with The Hobbit)!

Watched disc one of the Two Tower last night on my UST projector....looks great. As much as I love my OLEd tv, this is the way to watch these films. Puts you back into the theaters and with these new transfers it makes for a great viewing experience. Watch them as big as you can, these are no small screen movies.

A couple effects shots were tweaked for the theatrical versions.

In TTT TH, the shot of Faramir and company looking down on Osgiliath used to have generic mountains in the background rather than Minas Tirith - MT only appeared in the EE. The TH now has MT.

In ROTK TH, the shot of Aragorn first seeing the spirit of the King of the Dead in the pathway had a less distinct presence of his spirit, but was more distinct in the EE. Now the TH also has the more distinct presence of the King of the Dead, too

I so wish I had space in my house for a projector!

I find it an increasingly difficult choice. 180" of immersion, and great HD, or 65" of a perfect 4K video image.

Sadly the choice I'm finding more, and more is that my 65" for TV, projector for cinematic features!
