The New World: Extended Edition is finally being released on Blu-ray. This has been my most anticipated release for Blu-ray since the title was announced for DVD last summer. I'm unbelievably excited. And from a video and audio quality perspective, this easily has the potential to be a reference level disc, supposing Warner goes for BD50 (Lubezki was nominated for a cinematography Oscar for his work on the film). Now all I -- and the rest the Malick loving Blu-ray community -- must do is wait 4 months for it to drop!
And to the uninitiated and unappreciative guy who lumped TNW in with the rest of the mediocre catalog titles being released alongside it (see: 10 catalog titles from Warner Bros(talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel), rent this film. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-N...-Blu-ray/5573/ Last edited by Beta Man; 12-08-2009 at 01:02 PM. |

I too have been greatly anticipating this release on Blu! I've yet to see the longer cut of the film, but I agree that the cinematography alone is more than enough to recommend this to anyone. Doesn't hurt that much of the film was shot on 65 mm stock. I'm not sure why this film gets such a bad wrap.

Do we know if it will include the theatrical cut? I'm not a big fan of extended editions generally, they always seem to include things that were cut for a good reason.
Now, director's cuts, that's different, normally. Especially if it's Ridley Scott, for instance. But with extended cuts, just for the sake of more, they tend to be worse. |

I was afraid that might be the case. Now wouldn't it be great if Criterion were to co-produce a Blu release of DOH with Paramount, just like they did for 'Benjamin Button'?

The extended cut is, as far as I know, Malick's preferred version. I've heard that it was written into his contract that he would be able to release on DVD a new cut if the theatrical cut (which he was on a deadline to produce) didn't accurately represent his vision.
So, I don't think this is just Warner/New Line tossing in some new scenes. |

Also, the preorder is so very affordable right now. It's only kinda sad that it's Warner and not New Line releasing it, not anymore, since those guys might to a bitstarved A/V encode, but other than that--yeah, hosanna, Malick on Blu! This is such a must for me. |
