I don't remember much of this movie besides cliches everywhere and a cheesy soundtrack, not sure it's a first day buy. Will browse reviews and check prices first.

I definitely want to get this but I'm not sure when.

seems like a quality release. good transfer and all the criterion special features from the dvd + some new stuff. well worth $20.99.

Good review. I haven't seen the movie in years so I'm sure I'll pick it up at some point.

Masterpiece: Noun

1. An outstanding work of art or craft.
2. The greatest work, as of an artist. Also called masterwork.
3. Something superlative of its kind: a masterpiece of political ingenuity.

Now, why can't a film be called a "Masterpiece?"

I love Do the Right Thing, but 25th Hour is, IMO, Mr. Lee's best film. Followed by Do the Right Thing and then She's Gotta Have It.

umm, are you serious?! I don't think anyone here needed you to post the definition of "masterpiece." I said it shouldn't be thrown around when talking about film. Very few films should be called "masterpiece" and IMO none were ever directed by Spike Lee. If you just throw the word masterpiece around you devalue its meaning.

Don't you sound silly.

I guess that's why AFI decided to include it in it's top 100 movies of all time and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, one of five films to do so in its first year of eligibility.

yeah, gee I wonder why they did that??? Come on man, don't be naive. Its a good film, but certainly NOT a masterpiece...

I was looking at your movies and you call "There Will Be Blood" a masterpiece. I completely agree with that statement, so some of the irony is lost now. Oh well, just don't make it a habit.
You also say you haven't watched the Matrix yet because of all the hype it received. I'm confused by those type statements, since you must've bought it for some reason or another. You also say you bought the Harry Potter boxset just to bump up your collection number. What's going on in your mind?

1- TWBB IS a masterpiece (and I don't throw that term around lightly)
2- Matrix was purchased with the intent to watch it but it keeps making its way to the bottom of my list partly because I know it will not live up to my expectations at this point.
3-Not sure what you are talking about with the Harry Potter Boxset?

I think many people are so quick to jump on the 'Do the Right Thing' bandwagon because of something they heard or read in the past. I'm not going to tell you what you can and can't call a "masterpiece" but I do think if you are referring to ANY Spike Lee Joint as a masterpiece then you are taking the word too lightly. I mean, masterpiece? Seriously?

BTW, this is EXACTLY the kind of post I like to read. You are clearly an intelligent person and not just interested in throwing out blanket statements for the simple purpose of posting. I appreciate any dialogue and certainly any well thought argument when it comes to discussing movies. But I find more than not people are only interested in giving an opinion without any sort of rhyme or reason as to why they feel that way. If you think a film is a masterpiece, why do you think that? Its not wrong to have an opinion and I'm not trying to tell anybody there opinion is wrong. But you shouldn't just throw out terms like "masterpiece" when discussing cinema unless you have an argument to support such a statement of fact.

Universal has ruined the color timing of this. It's not what Spike Lee made. They've changed it from the hottest day of the year to a breezy spring day.
Oy. The same thing happened with Anchor Bay's subsequent Halloween releases.

Have you watched the blu-ray or are you basing your judgement solely on a few screenshots on the internet? Watch it in action, it's phenomenal.
You're right that it does look much more naturalistic, and the detail in the image is stunning. But the "orange" look to the film was intentional. Personally, I get much more of a sense of heat in the original transfer than the new one.

I still plan on getting this release very soon, but this is another reason why I'm not going to get rid of my Criterion release either.

You're welcome to feel that way, just as I'm welcome to disagree with you completely. Do The Right Thing is a bona fide masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned.

Believe me, I do not throw the term around lightly. Out of the hundreds of thousands of films, I think I might call 20-30 masterpiece?

It's obvious that you don't care for Lee's work, and that's okay. But to accuse me of mindlessly using a term to describe a film is absurd.

Curious to know which 20-30?

You are absolutely right, and I apologize. I let my opinion of the film cloud my judgement.
