The Mummy films were released individually not long after the set came out:

Along with SpazeBlue's reply for The Mummy films, Universal doesn't own the Men in Black series. Sony does.

A couple years ago i bought the set, with the 5 slim cases with original poster art, then sold the 4 sequels on eBay. Now I feel a little silly. Oh well. I’ll survive with my slim case edition.

Though really the slim cases aren’t too bad—they still fit two discs just fine.

Look what turned up in a source I'm reading for my dissertation (its on film restoration and ethics).

When its speaking about "shortcuts" at the very beginning, its referring to what the rest of the article is talking about. That being that "studios looking to save money will use existing, dated video masters and apply tools that were designed for repairing and restoring film damage to instead sharpen, smooth and conceal the limitations of the master they're using." Obviously not new information, just thought this would intrigue some.

Through my research I've discovered there's way more academic interest on these topics than I had first imagined...

One more example that studio execs can be cheap bastards.

Very interesting. Good to know that people outside of enthusiasts are aware of this.

Words on a page are neat. But they won't have more weight from an academic source than a hobbyist one

We already have a good evidence base through deductive reasoning that Universal believes JP series is a "cash cow" of theirs, and thus they can treat it like they do to maximise profits on its release and package re-releasing ad infinitum etc.

But directors have power. Other Universal titles signal this. Schindler's List shows here that's not how it HAS to be. Steven is failing us by not stepping in and insisting on new masters he oversees and supervises a DV grade for.

Say whatever you want about Universal and their up and down track record... at this point the issue is Spielberg. Him not being passionate about his home video legacy. Being on the record about where these stack personally is translating to, contributing toward and enabling this corporation to cut the corners.

Here's the PDF: https://scholarworks.gvsu.edu/cgi/vi...2&context=cine

If I somehow manage to stumble upon further details for anything when looking through the rest of my mountain of sources (i.e: the history of a films transfer) I'll obviously let people know, but I highly doubt there's a detailed academic study of JP specifically. This was just a brief mentioned example.

What's that second Blu-ray release being mentioned? The 3D Blu-ray?

Gotta say I only really like the first 4 films. Despite the lower quality of the 2nd and 3rd films, they were still enjoyable. The 5th film though? I was really disappointed with how the film turned out, especially the climax and ending.

With that being said, the individual releases look really nice. You can still get that 4-pack though, which would be cheaper than getting the 4 individually. I'm leaning towards that, but I'm not sure lol.

Couldn’t resist the individual releases (minus Fallen Kingdom since I have the sweet wal-mart steel)…pulled the trigger along with the Hitchcock releases on Gruv w/ coupon.

I already have the BB steelbook set for 1-5, but I already gave each film at least 3 watches, so I don’t feel too guilty about it. The reality is that I love all these movies and I will continue to revisit them frequently. My only disappointment is that there’s no US steelbook option.

Is there some type of improvement over the bluray? I have yet to own these. Need 1-3 in my collection. Not the biggest fan of everything after.

Will the re-releases have slipcovers?

First one is barely an upgrade, I do like DTS-X though. Lost World is definitely an upgrade. third one somehow looks soft like the first one but once again the DTS-X shines for me.

Slips not known for certain until someone actually sees one of these releases, but based both on promotional pictures, and Universals general track record with slips, it seems fairly likely the initial wave will include slips.

Yup for all my words on this page and others previous about them being a hit and miss, the first being on the mediocre side I still greatly appreciate the original on 4K. All the knowing how it could be better doesn't seem to matter once I put it on and the enjoyment comes in.

Probably doesn't hurt that a) I saw it 100+ times on VHS so this quality is objectively pin sharp and pleasing as compared to my majority of experience w/ watching the title lol ... b) This is the best TV I ever had to display any HD and beyond content period ... c) I'll engage DTM as standard for JP and have all the bells and whistles (settings) I could minus motion/artifact causing ones to bring out more than source 'accurate'.
