Anyone watched some of the HD machine learning videos of Voyager or DS9? I watched a couple on my projector and would be fairly happy with the film portions of those series remastered and the special effect that are on video just upgraded using machine learning. Yes, I would buy those BDs. https://nerdist.com/article/star-tre...ng-voyager-hd/. Seems like a decent compromise since a full scale TNG type restoration isn't happening.

I've seen a couple three of the DS9 machine learning videos (maybe a couple VOY too), and I've been impressed with them. The machine learning seems to be a genuinely better upscaling method that the one[s] typically used.
Provided CBS (assuming they still control Trek and not Paramount if ever such upscales happen) is upfront about it being a machine learning upscale, I'd likely buy the BDs as well. These shows really do need at least HD era masters going forwards, especially if 8K televisions become the dominate TVs on the market. An SD source is bound to look awful blurry on an 8K television even with the typical upscaling used in TVs and BD players. |

The reason I mention specifically Babylon 5 and seaQuest is that they are both DS9/Voyager era shows, and their remasters had two very different methods based on the source material: With Babylon 5, apparently they did new 4K scans of all the film elements, while the CGI (both space scenes as well as digital set extensions) and, unfortunately, composite video editing (any CG scene that fades into a live action scene) and effects (PPG fire, etc) are upscaled. Sadly, the upscaling looks pretty bad to me, notably the space scenes, which have a weird smoothed look to them, when they should look crisp. I don't imagine they used any type of AI / machine learning methods. seaQuest to me is the perfect example, luckily the show had been output to film, including the CGI. So while the CGI is of course "primitive" as early television CGI (just like B5), being scanned from the film output means that it's not upscaled or otherwise messed with in order to create the Blu-rays, it is perfectly preserved just like any early CGI movie (Jurassic Park, etc) and looks great, really the ideal way for an old show to be preserved. (Yes, I know that Jurassic Park is actually relatively late film CGI, it's just a good obvious example.) |

I would love an HD master, I just never hear about the costs of redoing the effects being economically feasible. But that would be great if it could happen.

I'd be afraid that if they took the AI upscaled approach that someone might decide that it is good enough and leave it at that. There is no way they will abandon a Star Trek series completely. I'd rather they wait until the costs to redo the CGI go down and they do it right.

Apologies for bumping this thread but I've been debating the last few years as to whether or not to buy VOY per the individual seasons second hand, either original or slimline, or just get this complete set? This is one of the three STAR TREK series which isn't in my collection so far. Being as it's in the production era of TOS to ENT. Only other two series which remains from that era are TAS on BD, far easier purchase, and DS9 on DVD.
Don't want to get burned on a bootleg as I've seen too many listed on eBay. |

DS9 and VOY are likely to get the same treatment Babylon 5 and Lois & Clark’s HD remasters got where the non-special effects shots are replaced with new elements sourced from the original film and the special effects shots are upconverted. Read compositing all of those special effects shots for TNG were stellar but terribly expensive for them.

Broadcast rights gave them more money. Blu-Ray sales gave them even more. Hell, they even re-released the DVDs halfway through the blu-run! That's even more money for them. Next Generation is a money farm |

About ST:V...
I first want to ask if this complete DVD set (from Amazon.com) is a legit (not bootleg) set: https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Complete-Joe-Menosky/dp/B08DC3ZCCV/ref=pd_vtp_1/142-2157628-6719421?pd_rd_w=s2byZ&pf_rd_p=016e3697-91be-4dc2-9533-ef9350e7e73d&pf_rd_r=3JS0GHSXB4Q7QV7EK9X4&pd_rd_r= 1fb99366-969c-4c8e-bd45-95f299a5d488&pd_rd_wg=Q0cun&pd_rd_i=B08DC3ZCCV&psc =1 Second, I am reading a lot into ST:V in a AI-upscaled form. I know it's a lot of work ahead, but will a DVD set do for now? |

That set is legit, and I’m not aware of any AI upscaling project for Voyager. If you have a TV or Blu-ray player with a good upscaler, the DVDs can actually look quite nice (especially in later seasons). Obviously it’s nothing compared to what a true HD restoration would do, but it’s as good as it’ll probably ever be. And there’s a lot of great special features on the DVD set.

A bit of an out of place bump, but does anyone here know why Voyager dvds are so expensive? I've been tracking the complete series set for a couple of years now, and I've never seen it drop below $120 (and if it does, it's always only one website at a time, and it's always back ordered). I've tried looking at the UK set releases, and those are still as expensive as the US discs. And even my local used movie/music stores have zero copies of any Voyager discs in stock.
It's not a series that's out of print, so it's not rare or hard to find. It's not the most popular Trek show, so it's not like it's a coveted set of discs. It's (probably) not coming out on bluray, so it's not like these discs are going to be collector's items. So, I don't get it. I've purchased TNG on bluray for less than $100. I've seen sales of DS9's series set on dvd going as low as $40. But Voyager? Is there some secret as to why this show still commands ~$120-$140 for a whole set? |

I also chose to get the individual seasons in a packaged set as opposed to that large case that has the stacked discs |

Worth checking eBay? Looks like there are some sellers matching the AMZ UK £60 price. No idea if they ship internationally though. The DVD prices across the board for both VOY and DS9 are a bit silly really, considering you can pick up the TNG blus for about the same price… ![]() |
