Synced the subs from my Criterion BD of Nights of Cabiria up to the StudioCanal BD that I imported before the boxset was announced two years ago. Required first changing the framerate of the subs from 23.976 (Criterion) to 24 (StudioCanal) in BDSup2Sub. Not that Criterion's subtitles are great. In fact, their outline is shitty. Really fuzzy and low res, especially shitty in their 4Ks, with the HDR around. I just don't like the thick outline on the StudioCanal subs. The UK subs are also too close to the border, but I could easily fix that. An alternative is changing the subs from image-based to text-based (SRT), but you end up with hundreds of typos.
Reason I did this is because Criterion overdoes it with the contrast in their transfers, nearly always, to the point that darker details disappear into the darkness. It doesn't really look like black and white of the era, makes it look more revisionist. [Show spoiler] Also noticed StudioCanal's 2.0 mono is louder than Criterions 1.0 mono. Probably more noise reduction, as usual. Edit: Watched it again. If someone asked me what my favorite movie is, I'd probably say this. It's not even that it's necessarily better than others that I love, but nearly every viewing affects me in a way that other movies don't always. Her loneliness/longing wouldn't mean anything if she didn't endure through them with such pride and optimism. If the actress didn't emote as she does. You can catch her smiling at times when she is supposed to be upset, but it's okay. The character's personality is ugly and likable at the same time. Poverty is a big theme, but she doesn't really seem to mind where she is too much. It's more that she has to live through that alone, I think. The score is dreamy, the visuals are picturesque. I wouldn't place this at the top of some top 10 list or anything, because I wouldn't make a list like that in the first place. Too many great movies out there to bother. Yeah, to bring it up again, really don't know why Criterion thinks it necessary to darken so many of their movies so much. If you set your TV's brightness closer to recommended levels, you already get very nice contrast with the StudioCanal disc. My Sony 900e is only at 10/50. I used to have it much higher, until someone here explained to me that only the HDR mode is supposed to max it out. So that it can use the full range of its limited HDR10. ![]() Last edited by Warm Gun; 05-11-2022 at 10:59 AM. |

(Assuming you're referring to Criterion):
If they can get the 4K rights from Paramount, La Dolce Vita. If they can't, 8 1/2. (If you just mean anywhere): Either the above from Criterion, or Studio Canal decide to upgrade |

Hi all.
Can anybody who snagged this that also picked up the Kino release of Casanova check something out. I noticed two things I had questions about: 1) At around the 3 min and 50 second mark there appears to be this blue swarm of static over any of the grey elements on the film (mainly seen on the Venice bridge and building in the background) 2) the last ten minutes of the film have a strange flashing that happens off and on mainly during the darker scenes with heavier grain. It's almost like a strobe light. :P I am wondering if this is supposed to look like this or did I perhaps get a bad disc? Any info would be much appreciated. |

You are misunderstanding. He said in his post that it was the Kino disc. And I don't think that particular disc has its own thread, so I can understand him posting about it in the Essential Fellini thread.

The blu static only appears in the opening party scene by the famed bridge in Venice and seems to only be over the grey/white area of the bridge, building and costumes. The strobe like flashing is in the last ten minutes in the darker scenes leading up to and during Casanova's dance with the mechanical doll. Otherwise, I'm ok with the restoration though of the 15 I've watched this month, this is probably my second least fav after Intervista but still some pretty amazing visuals (despite the blue gunk and rave strobe ![]() |

I have the disc but haven't seen it in a while. I'm glad this film finally got a BD release, but I remember not being particularly blown away by this release when I saw it. It's likely on all the discs. If I get a chance to check out my copy later, I'll report back.

Yeah, I tried looking for a thread on it. I also posted in the Kino thread but figured this was probably the best place as I'd gather fans of the director would have snagged that flick too.

Guys what's the difference between this set and the previously released Fellini by Criterion? This set having new titles? Also I assume these are 4k scans but ported to 1080p discs? If that's the case maybe Criterion gonna release native 4k discs too?

I'm actually surprised 8 1/2 hasn't had a UHD release yet, especially for its 60th anniversary last year. Seems like an obvious pick, unless Criterion were finally going to include the English track and that's what's holding up a release. |

I’m thinking Amarcord will be the first to 4K, with 8 1/2 not far behind.

I am going to put it to my watch list for now. Don't want to buy this and then see a 4k set coming. I wouldn't love a 4k set though. |

Just bought this one after the brilliant Bergman boxset.
Watched Variety Lights today and took a peek at La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2. It looks stunning. Great boxset. But i'm a little disappointed for the absence of Casanova and City of Women ngl |
