There are quite a few that I really like (Firefly, Babylon 5, new BSG, DS9, Roswell, Stargate), but I had to go with Farscape as my favourite.

Being quite the sci-fi fan, I love a lot of the series in your list. Among the more recent ones, I enjoyed Stargate (SG1 and Atlantis) quite a bit as well as the Battlestar Galactica remake.

However, if I have to choose only one, I have to go with the original Star Trek. In it's time, that series was groundbreaking: it elevated sci-fi TV from mindless entertainment to fantastic stories that actually had a message to tell. It also introduced iconic characters to us like Kirk, Spock, Bones and so on, for whom we really care when watching the show. It may be dated, but it's impact is still palpable in many current sci-fi TV shows.

I noticed that some other classic shows like the Outer Limits, Blake's 7 or Dr Who are missing from your list

I never expected X-Files to be in the lead, not surprising about BG, it's the most recent and as such the more likely choice.

I have to agree with those who have mentioned the original Twilight Zone and Outer Limits series - those were very influential series and ahead of their time! The original Outer Limits scared the heck out of me as a kid!

Hands down. Not strictly a Sci Fi show, but one of the best series ever made.

Only one true choice -- ST Original Series. Star Trek has influenced our world -- cell phones (the creator of the cell phone was a Trekkie, worked for Motorola, and invented the first cell phone -- influenced from ST), early primitive desktop computers (Altair 8800 -- named from ST) influenced Jobs and Gates; space exploration (many NASA employees are Trekkies, space shuttle Enterprise), and of course, warp drive ( ). Plus wait, there more! What about all of the ST TV spin-offs and movies. Kirk, Spock etc are household names. And short stories from some of the best sci-fi writers, ever, were adapted to many of the episodes. ST stories are classic, and timeless. Of course there are other good sci-fi series, but STOS is a phenomenon that no other TV sci-fi can beat.

Edit: BTW --- it's not exactly a sci-fi world like ST, but as noted above, another great series was Twilight Zone.

+1

I'll throw in my vote for Star Wars, Firefly, Stargate, Lost, and BSG....but Star Trek gets the main nod for being the most influential.
