Now on the other hand both the novel and film (Director’s cut) of Doctor Sleep were fantastic.

So if The Shining was never written we’d never get Doctor Sleep.

I bought Doctor Sleep 4K day one and was happy to find The Shining 4K on BF for $10. I could wait for The Shining to complete the set but not Doctor Sleep.
WHAAAAA???? Blasphemy!! I like Doctor sleep too and watch it now as a sequel but in no way does it compare to The Shining, nor does Shawshank which is also an excellent movie and great story but cmon better than The Shining?

As for The Shining, I happen to think the book is among his poorest efforts. It is too long for such a short novel. At 460 pages it is 90% rubbish and would have been better served as a very short story, very short. He padded that story out until it felt so bloated in my opinion.

King still throws out the odd punch directed at the movie once in a while and it shows how immature he still is, or at least can be, but the fans lap it up and adopt his attitude over it. The same happened when that train crashed and people died. King thought it was a moment for celebration because you know, Republicans. I was horrified by his Twitter outbursts on the subject and said so, I was openly attacked and left Twitter because of it, but other fans thought it really edgy and cool to mock the dead. As I said, he is a very immature man, and as a byproduct so are some of his readers. I hope his next work (Fairy Tale) has no mentions of Trump.
I love King as a novelist, but yeah, his Twitter rants are something else, lmao.

Stephen King has written some really good stuff, but his personality is twisted. Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining is in every way superior to King's novel. My conclusion is King is an a$$hole. Btw this 4K presentation is fantastic.

He’s starting to Roll like me now.

They will drop a 4-film set sooner (2001, The Shining, FMJ, ACO) or a 5-film set later this year or early next year (same four plus the new Kubrick release). Someone inevitably will drop the 13-film Kubrick set, most likely Warner Bros., with at least two films exclusive to that set. My predictions are Lolita gets dropped this year, then the box set comes with Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut as exclusives initially.

Edit: Also, per IMDb, the 1997 version of The Shining was shot on 35mm, not DV. So there is Blu-ray and 4K potential for that one.

The thing about King's novels is that underneath the possessed cars and telekinetic schoolgirls and intergalatic entities masquerading as clowns, there's a lot of heart and earnest sentimentality. Love conquers all, the monster is defeated by the power of friendship, that kind of deal.* Kubrick ain't about that life, though. I don't think he was all that interested in exploring Jack and Wendy in any great detail. He just wanted to make an atmospheric ghost story. And honestly, I'm fine with that. The mini-series proved that what works on the page doesn't always translate to the big screen, and the film is pretty long as it is. Anyway, that's ultimately why King's never been a big fan of Kubrick's films: no heart.

*More often than not, anyway. Some of his Bachman books are nihilstic as ****, and I was surprised by how dark Revival got at the end.

When getting a deeper look at some of the creative people whose work we admire via social media, interviews, etc. it is sometimes disappointing to learn how shallow and black and white they are in their worldview. King is one of those people, leaning hard into partisan thinking. "My party and everyone associated with it = good, the opposition and everyone associated with it = evil". And there's a complete lack of desire to see nuance; to acknowledge all the corruption that exists within his own chosen "team", as well as all the overlap that exists between the left and right (in all their forms).

Healthiest thing to do is to accept that these are just human beings like anyone else, prone to their own flaws and biases. Even though they can be incredibly talented and even highly intelligent, that doesn't mean they are infallible gods, knowledgeable and/or cool-headed on every matter.

My attitude now is: a great filmmaker, musician, author or whatever I like can sometimes say something stupid. Oh well. Life goes on.

I tried reading The Shining (the only King book I've read in fact) but I gave up partway through. I didn't like the writing style at all, too melodramatic and maudlin for my taste.

He did apologize https://twitter.com/stephenking/stat...14291348688898

Much like everything else these days, his initial reaction and subsequent apology is interpreted through politics. Let me be clear, he could have chosen not to tweet that. But bashing him for his dislike of Trump is political. He can choose to write his books about anything or anyone. Anyway this whole thing strikes me as ironic and out of bounds for this thread and I'm out.

It's a fine movie, but not so great adaptation and I believe King opinionated on it as such.
If they had made King an Executive Producer and paid him more money he would have loved Kubrick’s film and would have said so in public like he did for The Stand remake.

Many authors disassociate themselves from films made of their book because they’ve lost control and the film is now a totally different animal. They get paid and they are happy.

The directors of both It Parts 1 and 2 and Doctor Sleep consulted with King and were actively seeking his approval for changes. That gave him an ego boost and made it harder to badmouth the film.

Always helps to have a relative involved!

I am a huge King fan but I hate that he now inserts his politics into his books. I just disregard that stuff.
King is really good at making you get invested in his characters.

11.22.63 was also another bad adaptation but the book just might now be my favorite. The story of Jake and Sadie is really wonderful. When she freaks out over the lyrics to Honky Tonk Woman and the totally sentimental and romantic ending which the mini series totally F’d up.

King may have liked the TV series because it was "more accurate" but what it didn't have (and a lot of his adaptations don't) is the accurate mood and atmosphere. Kubrick took the entire world and basis of King's character study and translated it to the big screen without missing a beat, even while throwing out a chunk of the book. Some say he left out the heart too, which I don't jive with tbh; the humanity is there in spades even if it's bleak.

The time and place and mood are paramount to the experience. You can do the most thematically accurate adaptation ever and it can turn out like a fart on a Denny's pleather booth cushion.

So many adaptations in general do not lean in hard enough and lose their teeth. Kubrick went all in and gave it fang implants while he was at it!

Where are the links for this? I don’t even use Twitter, and it’s stupidity like this that’s why. While I agree with King that The Shining the book and The Shining the Kubrick movie are two wildly different things, they’re both good and enjoyable to me. I haven’t seen the 1997 version of The Shining, nor read Doctor Sleep, nor watched the Doctor Sleep movie, so I can’t comment on them. Regardless of the merits of the book and movie or lack thereof, he doesn’t need to be an immature prick about it. And being happy people died because they’re republicans or Trump supporters is just way below the belt. If it’s wrong for the right to cheer on the deaths of the left, it’s wrong for the left to cheer on the deaths of the right. King, who actually knows how to construct stories about human nature and knows how to integrate actual morals and values into horror stories, should know better.
