Stephen King has written some really good stuff, but his personality is twisted. Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining is in every way superior to King's novel. My conclusion is King is an a$$hole. Btw this 4K presentation is fantastic.

![]() They will drop a 4-film set sooner (2001, The Shining, FMJ, ACO) or a 5-film set later this year or early next year (same four plus the new Kubrick release). Someone inevitably will drop the 13-film Kubrick set, most likely Warner Bros., with at least two films exclusive to that set. My predictions are Lolita gets dropped this year, then the box set comes with Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut as exclusives initially. Edit: Also, per IMDb, the 1997 version of The Shining was shot on 35mm, not DV. So there is Blu-ray and 4K potential for that one. Last edited by Shane Rollins; 06-13-2022 at 05:58 PM. |

The thing about King's novels is that underneath the possessed cars and telekinetic schoolgirls and intergalatic entities masquerading as clowns, there's a lot of heart and earnest sentimentality. Love conquers all, the monster is defeated by the power of friendship, that kind of deal.* Kubrick ain't about that life, though. I don't think he was all that interested in exploring Jack and Wendy in any great detail. He just wanted to make an atmospheric ghost story. And honestly, I'm fine with that. The mini-series proved that what works on the page doesn't always translate to the big screen, and the film is pretty long as it is. Anyway, that's ultimately why King's never been a big fan of Kubrick's films: no heart.
*More often than not, anyway. Some of his Bachman books are nihilstic as ****, and I was surprised by how dark Revival got at the end. |

Healthiest thing to do is to accept that these are just human beings like anyone else, prone to their own flaws and biases. Even though they can be incredibly talented and even highly intelligent, that doesn't mean they are infallible gods, knowledgeable and/or cool-headed on every matter. My attitude now is: a great filmmaker, musician, author or whatever I like can sometimes say something stupid. Oh well. Life goes on. Last edited by MechaGodzilla; 06-14-2022 at 12:47 PM. I tried reading The Shining (the only King book I've read in fact) but I gave up partway through. I didn't like the writing style at all, too melodramatic and maudlin for my taste.

![]() [Show spoiler] He did apologize https://twitter.com/stephenking/stat...14291348688898 Much like everything else these days, his initial reaction and subsequent apology is interpreted through politics. Let me be clear, he could have chosen not to tweet that. But bashing him for his dislike of Trump is political. He can choose to write his books about anything or anyone. Anyway this whole thing strikes me as ironic and out of bounds for this thread and I'm out. |

Many authors disassociate themselves from films made of their book because they’ve lost control and the film is now a totally different animal. They get paid and they are happy. The directors of both It Parts 1 and 2 and Doctor Sleep consulted with King and were actively seeking his approval for changes. That gave him an ego boost and made it harder to badmouth the film. Always helps to have a relative involved! I am a huge King fan but I hate that he now inserts his politics into his books. I just disregard that stuff. King is really good at making you get invested in his characters. 11.22.63 was also another bad adaptation but the book just might now be my favorite. The story of Jake and Sadie is really wonderful. When she freaks out over the lyrics to Honky Tonk Woman and the totally sentimental and romantic ending which the mini series totally F’d up. Last edited by 50strat54; 06-13-2022 at 07:12 PM. |

The time and place and mood are paramount to the experience. You can do the most thematically accurate adaptation ever and it can turn out like a fart on a Denny's pleather booth cushion. So many adaptations in general do not lean in hard enough and lose their teeth. Kubrick went all in and gave it fang implants while he was at it! |
