The original Ghostbusters is also one of the most iconic 80s films and is held at an even higher regard than the original Top Gun. And as mentioned, Afterlife couldn't quite set the box office on fire. Perhaps, it's because Maverick is one of the most genuinely great and most crowd pleasing blockbusters in years that damn near EVERYONE liked?? One also has the consider the younger people without heavy nostalgia for the original that went and saw this, because the original is 36 years old.

(Ugh, I'm breaking my own rule by feeding them )

This will easily send the Tom Cruise movie past the half-billion point at the domestic box office; the pic already is the actor’s highest grossing of all time with $900 million-plus worldwide. Top Gun 2 continued to lead advance ticket sales today in the U.S., I hear."

* Elvis don't stand a chance.
If Elvis makes less than the $32m that Top Gun 2 is being predicted to make, does that make it a disappointment?

However, I think the points it makes actually do make a lot of sense and TG2 (as they pointed out) is actually a terrific example of this trend, as are so many other of Paramount's recent hits: Scream, Sonic, Jackass, all properties that go back to the 90s in one form of another.

TG2 goes even further to 1986....

But yeah, Paramount is definitely making mint thanks to nostalgia - it's something audiences want.

I try my best not to speculate on extras, but personally I'd prefer a feature-length documentary, similar to what the first Top Gun was given for its DVD release. I usually don't care about deleted scenes, since they're often left out for a good reason.

I should watch that again.

Especially with the sequel joining the Billy club this week!
I checked the on-site reviews for the original Blu-Ray release and the recent 4K disc. Both contain the six-part documentary called "Danger Zone: The Making of Top Gun". The 4K offering goes even further though, with a new five-part behind-the-scenes offering added to the bonus fare.

Somewhere in the multiverse there's a dimension where Top Gun is equal to or greater than Spider-Man as a cultural phenom...but it ain't this one.

I'd prefer a Blu-Ray release, rather than another theatrical showing. The closest theater to my house is 30 minutes away, and with gas being so expensive, its crazy to keep going out there...especially for a movie I've already seen.

Elvis is a 2 hours and 40 minutes long Musical.
It's a flick for the girls, mainly. Estimate for this weekend: $30 million +/-
Not a disappointment, just less money by the numbers.

It won't disloge Maverick (the boys club), even on its 5th weekend.

Remind me, why did GPS jammers mean that stealth aircraft could not be used to complete the mission?

I wonder if it was the film's tacit way of acknowledging that stealth technology has been breached?

In support of that, The "Fifth Generation Fighter" is a stealth aircraft, yet the US Navy had no trouble detecting it in the film. I imagine the USN would have frowned upon TGM outright saying that The Enemy can see through our stealth too.

I suppose we could point to Syria as a case in point that the modern rules of war allow for the bombing of one airfield without drawing retaliation, but it sure was weird that the mission paired stealth with shock and awe. Why not (preemptively) bomb the SAM sites and the airport both?

The GPS jammer line brought to mind Star Trek's bit about the Moon hiding the warp core signature.

Just got back from seeing this a second time with my nephews (their second time too) and it was even better a second time. The entire theatre was slammed.

Definitely a good shout regarding Ghostbusters. But it's not the only movie to try to cash in on nostalgia that hasn't made nearly as much money as Top Gun Maverick at the Box Office, courtesy of BluBonnet:

Another fine example that nostalgia isn't the driving factor of a successful Box Office run.

To put it into perspective: in less than a month, Top Gun Maverick has made more than double what Eternals made at the BO in it's entire run, and made more than triple the Box Office take of Ghostbusters: Afterlife as well.

I'll wait and see what the final BO numbers are at the end of Lightyear's run. I'm sure nostalgia will turn it from a current flop into a blockbuster.

And yes, I am a glutton for punishment.

That we know; which day...next Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday?
Because the International numbers are always late in the stats, for several reasons.

Anyway, what's important are women, life and Elvis.
