I caught Maverick in ScreenX the other night, which was my second visit because my best friend wanted to see the film. First time watching: regular screen, 2nd time: ScreenX. Didn't realise it was a screenX showing so was quite surprised when it started. All I can tell you is that ScreenX is a really, really, really, really, really stupid gimmick that can only have been thought up by some idiot marketing genius who has never experienced film projection in their life, because you have two massive light sources either side of the screen running all the way down the side walls. What is that going to do? Yes, it's going to wash the crap out of the film screen, simply for the purpose of greater "immersion", which if the director has done his job, you only need a single screen to achieve.

Maverick is the perfect context for ScreenX "immersion" and I can confirm that the extra footage either side was nothing but a curiosity, added nothing to the aerial sequences other than the complete inability to make out what was going on in the darker shots.

If you had a hard time making out what was in the darker shots, the theater was not using enough light for its main projector. I've never had that problem.

The fact that a movie no one wanted or asked for can still just come out & surprise people is amazing

Domestic could be as high as $750m. I'm still rooting for it to soar to $2b global. But that doesn't happen without a fall re-release.
