Good thing I still haven't picked up the UHD, lol...

If WB wants to take another crack at their first-gen UHD-BDs and re-release them with improved Dynamic HDR grades and fresh encodes on a BD-100, who are we to complain?

I prefer the Director's Cut from 2001 over the Theatrical Cut from 1978.
Even worse - the 4K box set is the only way to get the new transfer of the first film(both cuts). There are singles being released but ONLY for 2(both cuts in one package) and the garbage 3rd and 4th films. Great. Just great.

Im OUT. Staying with the blu-ray set. Whatever.

Why not just buy the singles you want from Amazon UK? Hell, I bought the 2010 Superman boxset from Amazon UK as it was a lot cheaper vs the U.S. version. Edit: sorry, I was thinking the first movie was going to be a single release in the UK.

You teal-phobics better make peace with that.

Not entirely sure what i'm going to do yet but I've pre-ordered the boxset as a placeholder. Honestly, as a fan of only I & II, it's gonna be far cheaper to just buy the Zavvi exclusive steelbook of Superman II and pay a dumbass price for the Superman I steelbook on eBay once people start cannibalising their boxsets, which they absolutely will.

Even if I end up paying £50, £60, £70 for that one steel and £25 for the Zavvi, i'm still coming in way under the £130 price tag for big daddy tat deluxe

Not expecting him to do TV at that point, I was blown away when the end credits revealed that the footage was lensed by him, with his usual Kidder-appeasing haze.

My Missus just looked at me with an expression which said "you're weird..."

It wasn't. It's something Warner was doing on a common basis on their catalog remasters for BD to varying degrees. You catch flashes here and there on some BDs but they went further on the new HD masters made for the Superman Anthology set. Theatrical I and II, III and IV suddenly had teal grading selectively applied that had nothing to do with the color variations in the main costume for all the myriad of effects shots-the suit being primarily blue just made it more obvious that stuff had been tweaked.

I've only seen a print of the original film (a pristine preserved original or something struck slightly later) which was a few years ago but it had none of what turned up in the newer grades.

the four films are already on hbomax but any chance they'll update them with the 4K versions after this release?

I doubt it because they're trying to go cheap with their streaming service, and hardly anything (perhaps nothing else) beyond new releases get the 4K version on HBOMax. And even then not even every new release gets a 4K version there (only usually the "big" movies).

The VOD services will certainly get the 4K upgrades. HBOMax likely won't go all-in on 4K streaming until AV1 is more prevalent in streaming boxes and TVs. The only UHDTVs that are well-positioned for that at this time are the Amazon Fire TV models, which have had it in their specs for a few years now. 4K streaming boxes like the Fire TV are only now starting to get it, but older 4K-capable hardware can be upgraded with heavily-optimized AV1 software decoders that take advantage of the GPU power for decoding.

Very, very few things do, but there are exceptions, like POLTERGIEST got the 4k bump when the UHD came out. Matrix films got bumped up, too.

I think HBOMax's copy of the first film is an HD downres of the 4K master. Ironically, the Krypton Council scene looks a little better without the HDR grading.

A re-release of Superman The Movie will be playing at the BFI Southbank and BFI Imax in the UK from this April.

Really glad they put the 4K Matrix trilogy on there, it looked fantastic. Fingers crossed they will do the same for Superman.

I finally got around to picking this up and I'm incredibly confused about something.

When I select the "Original Theatrical English" track my player (Sony UBP-X800M2) is showing it as a DTS-HD MA 2.0 track. I figured that this was the 70mm 5.1 mix, but apparently not? Is this the 35mm Dolby Stereo mix? There's zero mention on the packaging or on this site's review about there being any DTS-HD on the disk at all.

I can't find a 5.1 mix of any sort, anywhere on the disk. Only Atmos, the mystery DTS-HD 2.0, all the DD 2.0 mixes for the foreign languages, and the commentary track.

I was really excited to here the 70mm mix and I literally have no idea how to access it. Any pointers?

That's very odd. I can't help with that player, but I know I have access to the 70mm track on that disc. My copy says Atmos and 5.1

How do you access the 5.1? Is it the "Original Theatrical English" option on the disc's audio menu?

Edit: also, in the short time I've had this player I've had multiple issues of this sort, more than every other DVD/blu-ray player I've own in my life combined. It's my first UHD player and I honestly hate it. When I have some more cash I need to sell it and get something better.

I popped the disc into my PS5. There's a blue menu bar on the bottom that says "Play - Scene Selections - Audio - Subtitles - Commentary". Selecting "Audio" slides up a menu that says "English (Dolby Atmos) - English (Dolby Digital 5.1) - Francais - Deutch ->"

This is what it looks like for me:

https://imgur.com/a/rhbUQd8

Also, it defaults to the Atmos track for me, even though the site review spends a whole paragraph complaining about how the disc defaults to the lossy 5.1 track.
