I think the black level concern either only applies to older lcds or inexpensive lcds. I have a Sony Bravia lcd and it displays solid black w/o a hitch.
Plasmas run the risk of screen burn-in especially due to the little station ids that are displayed at the bottom right of the screen. Some will say that it has been corrected but I have read recent reviews by people who have even had this problem with new Pioneer Pro Plasmas.
I am not like an hd-dvder trying to get others to follow my mistake. If you buy a Sony or Samsung lcd I am certain that you will be thoroughly satisfied, and it will cost less both initially and in the long run.
