These bootleggers aren't even trying anymore with the dialogue on the back.

May have been picked up by someone before, but Pinocchio is getting a Blu-ray, presumably from Criterion, with an extended version of the Handcarved Cinema documentary.

Great news. Has to be Criterion. I'm sure it will be 4K as well. The film is an amazing visual masterpiece.

The tweet is gone, but I'm guessing this is Del Toro's Pinocchio? Can anyone paraphrase what was said?

The tweet shows the Premiere Pro edit timeline, running 1:39:54.

It's been a year since I first started on @Netflix's Handcarved Cinema, (Pinocchio doc) and it's time to crack it open to extend it for the #bluray release.

Disney owns LiS now IIRC. If so the show is locked away forever. Sucks for the fans.

Hopefully a US Blu-ray too, but if not, I’ll just import. So happy, absolutely loved this series, and so glad it won’t be stuck on Netflix.

While Fox produced the original series and released it on disc, the reboot series was produced by Legendary Television. So maybe 20th/Buena Vista have distribution rights to every version of the series on disc because of the original, but I’m not sure. Disney are rumoured to be selling off TV assets though.

Unless they somehow license it to Criterion, at the director's contractual demand, that seems unlikely, for now.

Netflix produced that movie themselves, they didn't license it from another company, and they paid $450 million for the franchise, in order to attract people to their streaming service. Any disc would only undercut that, unfortunately.

Would it, though ? I keep hearing that argument, but in 2023 I just don't believe that anymore.
Disc buyers like us have become a niche crowd. Everybody who wants to stream is already doing that and they're clearly not coming back.
What they're doing now is leaving money on the table from disc buyers who will pay higher prices for a copy.
The subscriptions they would lose by releasing a disc of a movie is truly minimal imo, if any at all.

I don't necessarily think it is true, actually, but I do think it's what the streamers still believe.

HBO Max (or whatever it's called this week) dipped its toe into physical media recently by releasing some of their streaming-only films as DVD-only, like their three Soderbergh titles. I can only hope more streamers follow.

Well, that's a start, but DVD-only isn't really gonna cut it, is it ?
I haven't bought a DVD since 2007 and I'm not gonna start again now.
They should realize that's not really what we're going to buy.
IMO, Paramount is the only one doing it right, at the moment, regarding physical media.

It's possible I'm wrong, but I suspect they did market research and found the people most likely to want to watch HBO Max content, but not to have streaming, probably also don't have Blu-Ray players. And DVD still outsells BD by a wide margin anyway. Most titles only released on one format are still DVD only. Lots of smaller films are DVD only.

Are people still not aware that Blu-ray players also play DVDs? I wonder what percentage of those folks still sticking with DVD don’t know that they can get slightly better quality with HD but believe they have to buy a separate player lol

I think a shockingly large number of consumers are perfectly happy with DVD, and aren't interested in any difference in quality even with BD. I have plenty of friends and relatives like that, especially older ones, who are probably the primary consumers who never switched to streaming.
