I have only read the first short story years ago, but the beacons aren't really lighthouses. Still doesn't make sense....you would need a lighthouse every lightyear. I think in this episode, they ran into Dark Matter, not asteroids.
You have all of the universe to just go around something you might run into.

Asteroid fields aren't like they are shown in the movies also...they are spread out.
If any ship built cant detect obstacles, it has no business flying....how many ships did they lose mapping all the obstacles ??
Writer needs to stick to holes in the ground.
