I have only read the first short story years ago, but the beacons aren't really lighthouses. They emit "gravity waves" as warning signs to help ships traveling faster than light avoid dangerous areas, such as the asteroid field near beason 23. If you accept that FTL travel is possible, it kind of makes sense, since you'd obviously not be able to see obstacles visually or by radar before it's too late. The rotating light beam effect is just a silly invention of the TV show.
