I think you guys need to realise Microsoft is a huge corporation and whilst Xbox may be a sub division, its a pretty large business bringing in billions a year. Add to that they just bought one of the biggest publishing buyouts and they need to find a way to make bank.

Playing nicer to release their games on multiple platforms and targeting the widest net makes more sense to them, they'll do it.

I just think though Xbox and Sony will still have plans to stay separated enough to remain distinct.

It makes the most sense if MS is getting out o the hardware business and going full third party with their software. Why invest money in developing your own box when you plan to release everything everywhere anyway? Im gonna guess is that the Xbox One is their last dedicated console

Well look at how STEAM made their own hardware too. I don't think MS plans to get out the hardware game anytime soon, but the plans to try diversify the brand. Even Sony went to the PC market afterall and if memory serves MS did it before Sony but wasn't seen as much of a deal.

Its not quite the same thing. Steam is a storefront. Valve doesnt really make g ames anymore so they arent in the same position that MS is. Neither is Sony. MS is putting their stuff on everything. It makes less ense to continue to make your own box when you employ that strategy

There seems to be more than one thing going on. More than one source that rumored Starfield has now backpedaled. Not sure if someone within Microsoft got in contact with them. But after backpedaling, one of them completely turned comments OFF on Twitter. If anything, this could just be a trial run. Drop a few AA games. Check numbers. See how it affects business to release something like Indiana Jones 6 months later, to see if the interest is there for PlayStation users to spend money on a game others have already been playing for a while. Which could mean aside from maybe Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves, it could be a year or two before we even see anything else out of this. Maybe the PlayStation ports will have as much “love and care” as Sony gives to their PC ports. Sony would gladly take the games right now, however, as they bought and paid for third party exclusives to get them through the beginning of what is probably going to be an extremely light Sony first party 2024.

And we already kind of know, because of court documents that were leaked, there’s an Xbox console already in development with a planned 2026 release. That’s all digital. There are rumors Microsoft wants to move into the handheld space, as well. There’s a possibility part of their reticence to respond to anything is because some of their future strategy WILL be shocking. There are rumors part of this business strategy change is to announce they will be going full digital by the end of 2024 (a realm PC gaming has been in now for nearly a decade), and they know an announcement like that will not be taken lightly. But it’s ultimately where we’re headed. Even Push Square, a Sony-centric site, published an article in November that digital PS5 game sales outweighed physical sales 67% to 33% in 2023.
