I think you guys need to realise Microsoft is a huge corporation and whilst Xbox may be a sub division, its a pretty large business bringing in billions a year. Add to that they just bought one of the biggest publishing buyouts and they need to find a way to make bank.
Playing nicer to release their games on multiple platforms and targeting the widest net makes more sense to them, they'll do it. I just think though Xbox and Sony will still have plans to stay separated enough to remain distinct. |

Personally i think Sony is game for the right deal if it makes financial sense and they can PR spin it as a win or mitigate the damage on the optics of Xbox games on PlayStation. 3rd party offerings from Bethesda and Activision make the most sense to start with as they were already prior to acquisition on PlayStation. The real test is whether, just maybe MS decide to release a "custom" version of GamePass that doesn't step on the toes of PS+ Extra offerings which was mentioned as a huge overlapping area of concern. An "Xbox Pass" for just the MS exclusives per se at a discounted price or physical releases also available. A year or so after launch kinda like Sony does for PC releases of PlayStation exclusives. |

There seems to be more than one thing going on. More than one source that rumored Starfield has now backpedaled. Not sure if someone within Microsoft got in contact with them. But after backpedaling, one of them completely turned comments OFF on Twitter. If anything, this could just be a trial run. Drop a few AA games. Check numbers. See how it affects business to release something like Indiana Jones 6 months later, to see if the interest is there for PlayStation users to spend money on a game others have already been playing for a while. Which could mean aside from maybe Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves, it could be a year or two before we even see anything else out of this. Maybe the PlayStation ports will have as much “love and care” as Sony gives to their PC ports. Sony would gladly take the games right now, however, as they bought and paid for third party exclusives to get them through the beginning of what is probably going to be an extremely light Sony first party 2024.
And we already kind of know, because of court documents that were leaked, there’s an Xbox console already in development with a planned 2026 release. That’s all digital. There are rumors Microsoft wants to move into the handheld space, as well. There’s a possibility part of their reticence to respond to anything is because some of their future strategy WILL be shocking. There are rumors part of this business strategy change is to announce they will be going full digital by the end of 2024 (a realm PC gaming has been in now for nearly a decade), and they know an announcement like that will not be taken lightly. But it’s ultimately where we’re headed. Even Push Square, a Sony-centric site, published an article in November that digital PS5 game sales outweighed physical sales 67% to 33% in 2023. |

Here's a funny thought. Let's say MS' next console is just a windows based open source "PC in a box" sort of like a Steam Machine or Rog Ally/Steam Deck? Doesn't that mean technically Sony games that have been ported to PC will now be available on Xbox??

Ultimately, after having time to sit with the info, the Xbox is still my preferred console this generation, for the majority of my gaming. As mentioned, I prefer the controller, it handles backwards compatibility way better and I do indeed love Game Pass and get a lot of value out of it. This will not change over the coming years. I also have a PS5, which, for me, has lately just kind of become a JRPGStation. Currently, I’m deep into Tales of Berseria. |

However, i think the Xbox brand thrives on having a physical presence and Sony as well as MS will continue to release hardware respectively branded. You have to remember that MS would have an even bigger and significant bloat using any PC operating system as well as the fact the hardware would fall behind far quicker imo than how a traditional console usually can still improve via optimisation. The bigger threat imo is an all digital hardware. That happens, with the international PlayStation stores no longer working as a grey market way to purchase, i can firmly say i'm going to pretty much pull back completely from PlayStation and consoles in general to probably build a PC. With new TVs getting 144hz support, there's a lot more scope to enjoy big screen gaming with DLSS and so on in higher refresh rates. MS also pretty much release all their major IPs alongside like Ubisoft etc. and Sony now have started with PlayStation too which will probably only increase. Disc based gaming is a big thing to me, but if we're heading all digital, i want the damn cheapest pricing i can get and that includes being able to jump through some hoops if i want better pricing. |

Good point, are there any SIE games on the Microsoft Store other than the original Death Stranding? All other Sony PC games are only on Steam and Epic, so even if there was an PC-based Xbox handheld that supported Windows games it probably wouldn't see any PlayStation ports. Maybe MLB The Show if it also played Xbox console games.

One choice for hardware means one cost point for entry, which will be higher than it is now. Why? Why not? No choice. SONY is only offering disc and discless to have two price points like MS. When that need goes away I fully expect one console, without disc drive to give the consumer "choice" when they can buy it separately. SONY is already extremely lax on adding features via updates. Imagine without a competitor urging them on. SONY already stopped retailers from selling digital codes. Hardley anybody batted an eye. A couple grumbles here and there about their first party titles staying expensive like Nintendo's but that's chalked up to "they're great enough that I don't care." Now imagine where those themed digital sales (new years, summer, et cet) that MS also does at the same time, are no longer necessary for optics. Sales will be few and far between. On a far more conspiracy theorist angle, imagine only being able to buy hardware straight from SONY. They already tested the waters with PSVR2. Yes an expensive ad on that brick and mortar should be terrified of carrying but that made it the best case study. This goes with the point above. They moved the goalposts on retail and retail didn't push back. They couldn't really. Now imagine them taking all hardware out of store and only making it available via PS Direct. Gives them even more profit on already slim hardware margins. Retail can't push back. Let physical media die in retail. They'll be glad to still have that bone. Fanboys will say "why is this bad, PS Direct has been pretty good." Sure, when it works. But remember when TLoU LE dropped? Site burned down instantly. Remember when they arrived damaged? Here's your money back. We don't have replacements. Having multiple storefronts eases the preordering process. Shortages should be because of product availability and not the servers ability to handle a load. Game pricing. They already raised it once. I'm sure I'll think of more and this is all assuming Xbox leaves hardware. Most seems like hyperbole but sit back and take an unobjective view. These companies are not your friends and when they don't have a need to act like it anymore they will turn on a dime. But what do I know. Maybe Xbox bows out and the industry only makes changes for the betterment of the payers. |
