That is to be expected. When there is not much light, the film is underexposed.

But I had asked multiple times in other threads and nobody said anything, hence the giant font.

So, thanks for the reply. Now I finally know.

I like that it tries something different, but I totally understand why people don't like it. At the very least, the street brawl is more exciting than the god awful Mason Dixon fight in Balboa.

Yet it's one of the things I like about it.

Give the audience the same old and they complain.

Change it at all and they complain.

Rocky V has the best transfer overall to me, followed by the original Rocky not far off. There are a couple shots I noticed in Rocky V that feel like some smoothing or DNR or AI is occurring. Not sure which. One can literally watch the skin texture become smoother in motion.

I don't feel any love went into the transfers of Rocky III or Rocky IV theatrical version. They look pretty rough in spots.
They look amazing IMO - being mindful of when they were made, what they were shot on and how opticals and dupes factor into it - godawful compression on Rocky II and IV aside. People keep saying they "look rough" and had "no effort" put into them, but then I guess that's why MGM went and added a DNR pass (albeit very subtly and tastefully) to Rocky V, because folks still just don't do grain. 1-4 are some of the most unfettered transfers to have ever come out of a major studio, such is the lack of ****ery there. Sadly, they're likely to be the last.

I think you need to get another new 4K player because this one's starting to make you go all 'opposite land' again

Not sure if this was posted yet, but the Spanish set also comes with all the BDs. I know they're kind of redundant but more discs is always nice.

So you now like a movie that up you have disliked for the past 18 years only because it has a nice transfer?

Some of y’all are weird.

Yeah I don’t really get it. I get finding it harder to get into a movie because a bad transfer (or bad overall image, i.e. Jaws 3)… though I doubt Rocky V has ever looked actually wretched. I’d suspect it’s always looked… fine, especially back in the CRT days.

However, a really nice transfer can renew my love for a movie. Can’t say the same for actually changing my opinion on one unless previous versions were actually hard to look at.

Those movies were shot by the undisputed heavyweight champion of film grain: Bill Butler. In that context, I see the untweaked transfers they did for those as the most loving imaginable.

Two keepcases, one with the 4Ks and one with the BDs.

You'll actually get more extras with the old blu-rays. The only one you'll be missing is The Making of Rocky vs Drago. You can still watch the longer version of that on youtube though (only 720p).

Fair point, I forgotted there was a remastered BD of the first Rocky which included a bunch of stuff.

Edit: tho DVDcompare sez it comes with the bonus disc anyway

Even better. I have the blu-rays, and I still want the bonus disc.
Most of it is redundant, but still...

Italian one is €30 cheaper at this point in time but doesn't come with 1080p blus. I had them already however so the Italian is wot I went for.

The Rocky V transfer is not “very bad”.
