It is amazing to me the high standards to which we hold our film artists -- Quentin Tarantino? Overrated? Orson Welles never directed a hit film in his life...some of you Welles experts are probably familiar with the story where a young man praised the purity of Welles films because they weren't tainted with commercial success and Welles turned on the guy and told him that commercial success was fundamental to a director, because that allowed him to continue to work. Welles lamented the fact that he made work that no one paid to see -- people praising it 30 years later did little good for him at the time. It broke his heart.

So here is Tarantino, who for better or worse influenced an entire generation of filmmakers and has had the blessing to continue working in the film business. Overrated? He is an a rare circle of filmmakers whose work changed film history. He's had his flops and his hits. You know what? If he never made another film again, his place in the eternity of film is secured, and I think he knows it. He has nothing left to prove. In fact, I'd say he's been pretty much screwing around and not taking himself seriously ever since Pulp Fiction.

I've been told numerous stories about Quentin, none of them good, by people who were very jealous of him and threatened by him. If half of the stories are true, then I can't say I respect Quentin as a man, but it is impossible to not respect his place in film history.

Overrated? Nope!

Acquired Taste? Definitely!

I don't believe anyone or anything, be it a movie, TV show, book, entertainment personality etc. etc. can be overrated! They are simply highly rated by a majority!

To be honest I do not see why you would think you killed the thread Ernest... you hit all the right notes for me with the comment that preceded the thread killing paragraph!

Nah, I think your post actually has a very good and thought-provoking point. Nobody's responding because there is no strong counter-argument.

Good job!

Tarantino's movies are always a bit surreal, and I think that is what draws either the accolades or the ire. One is either swept up in the experience or turned off by it. Personally, I think what he does is largely effective, and he's made some great movies (Reservoir Dogs and Deathproof being my least favorites).

I don't think he's "overrated." At least, I don't get the sense that people, on the whole, see Tarantino as the greatest-of-all-time, or anything like that. But, people tend to get excited when he does roll out a new movie because his stuff is reliably unique and his style is pure cinema, so folks are curious to see what he's got. In that regard, I'd say he's "correctly rated."

I will say one thing.....his over use of the "F" word can get pretty annyoing. He could take half of those out and you would even have a better film. I think he uses that word sometimes just to use it.

funny you mention this-- I'm not a prude and I don't mind R-rated language--

however I CANNOT STAND movies that have the F-word in EVERY sentence!!!!!! It's obnoxious and quite frankly sloppy writing---
many of Tarentino's flicks overdo this and make an already unpleasant
experience worse...

I don't see how anyone that is truly a lover of film would not be excited and interested in a Tarantino movie. I can understand how it can be a bit much for casual movie goers, as for me I’m excited to see every Tarantino film (the ones he directs not just writes or produces). To me he has changed the way many films are made how can this be over rated?

I guess eveyone has different taste in movies. Kill Bill vol 1 is on my top ten list of favorite movies. This the beauty of movies what some people like other may not like as much.

I'll have to watch the Kill Bill movies sometime but most of his other movies I've seen and I think he is overated and i'm not a fan. I know many that do like his movies though.

Same here, and I disagree with the decision to turn Kill Bill into a two part movie... 2 dragged but it was still good.

He's had a couple of good movies and a lot of duds.

Dusk Till Dawn was one of his best, but from what I've read the best parts weren't done by him.

Default QT = The Man.

If by "Overrated" you mean the most imitated and influential American filmmaker since Scorsese, then I guess he is, sure.

I'm not going to say the film did not carry it's share of flaws, but I hope Tarantino has managed to squeeze his way up in your books.

I just thought you'd be all over this thread since friday... which you wern't so I thought you must have realized you were being a ****ing ass clown and decided to stop bashing a brilliant filmmaker.

note* If you can't tell you ****ING FAKE ARTSY ASS CLOWN! i'm still a bit pissed about you calling me a fake artsy type. Let's get the review. I'll gladly post mine after I can rebuttle on yours.
