Comes with the package with Vinegar Syndrome releases...
Both Southern Comfort and eXistenZ also featured pretty vivid colour palettes...
Didn't mind, though, because PQ was near impeccable otherwise, IMO.

The French release of eXistenZ has the same grade, so it seems it’s not a VS phenomenon.

Perhaps, but many VS 4K titles are a bit on the hot side when it comes to saturation. They need to tone it down. The recent comparison between the VS and Turbine Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is an example. Skin tones on the VS are too red, while the Turbine looks more natural.

It is too overcooked. With many VS titles, you need to adjust the color saturation on your tv to make the image look better. Obviously, we shouldn't have to resort to doing that.

I'm guessing the Arrow will be more like the Turbine too

Thought the same in the main Snake Eyes thread. The TV shot on 11 being off center is so strange too. There does seem to be a tad extra detail: hair in 1, spotlight shows more highlight detail and small detail in the background on 2 (although overall it seems really processed), towel on 3, suit/shirt in 5&6&7. The blu was really good but this should've been a massive upgrade and it's not.

Yup, the grain definitely has an electronic look to it. I love grain, but only when it's done right and with Snake Eyes, it doesn't look natural.

If they did a fresh 4K scan of the OCN, it shouldn't look like this. They used an older master for sure.

The extra touch detail could’ve already been present in the older master but filtered out during the encode. It was the same with Turbine and their regrades where a touch of previously unseen detail was unearthed.

Sampled some scenes from Snake Eyes in my HT. I'm not an expert, but it looks like EE to me. Doesn't look like UHD releases I've seen with fresh OCN scans.

Hopefully someone else with a better eye for this stuff can comment.

Ahh true, didn't think about that. Would that highlight detail be revealed though? The opening and end credits seem to be new at least.

It could be re. highlight detail since the old master is very good. It looks like Paramount did it on a newer scanner vs. the usual old Spirit telecine stuff. The SDR grade and their encode might have clipped the detail away. Can’t really tell that though. If they indeed did a new scan, even though it’s KL I doubt the film would look like it does now.

I believe the old BD was WB and got rereleased by Paramount fairly recently. Not sure when they acquired the film. Some of those old WB blu-rays hold up surprisingly well - I watched a rip of The Last Boy Scout and it looked great for the time. Helps that these films are beautifully shot of course, but there isn't any heavy sharpening / DNR and a clear grain structure / level of detail on these films.

The original "Snake Eyes" Blu was released when Warner Bros was handling Paramount's home video output.

WB BD vs Kino UHD BL+FEL

Looks to be a solid new transfer. However, the encode is yet another set-and-forget from Kino that falls apart in the highlights.

I like the SS disc, it looks more like the movie I saw in theaters.
