Default HDR in games sucks.

I finally got an OLED monitor recently and have been testing out HDR in a bunch of games, and I have to say... 90% of the time I prefer the calibrated SDR picture with 2.4 gamma.

Even if the game has a decent black level floor that reaches close to zero the overall black level is almost always greyer. The contrast is almost always flatter. This is with HGIG enabled, without that enabled they look even worse as everything is insanely bright.

I love HDR in movies. I've been a fanatic for the 4k movie format since it started and I had a crappy edge-lit LCD that still managed decent HDR. Games though? I've basically settled on never using it.

I had two OLED monitors (PC monitors), and HDR never worked right on either one of them.
Now I use my LG OLED C1 or Samsung S90 to play games. The HDR is awesome.
One of the best examples is Horizon: Forbidden West. If it doesn't look right on your monitor, then try it on a TV with HDR and see what happens.

Do the games that suck still suck in HDR? Maybe that's your problem. I haven't owned a console since PS4 but I was excited to see Death Stranding and Doom Eternal in HDR when I got an OLED. I thought Death Stranding looked weird, the brightness swings were a bit much and I thought the SDR looked more natural. Doom Eternal looked better, still didn't like the game any better. On PC I only play old games no HDR anyway.

HDR in games impress me much more than in movies. The only drawback is that sometimes it causes eye strain.

The monitor I got uses an LG panel and has high marks across the board, that's not the problem. Developers raising black too much in HDR is the problem.

JFizDaWiz it's an ASUS AQDM.

I totally get what you're saying. I have an OLED myself, and I've been messing around with HDR in games, but honestly, I usually prefer the SDR with a 2.4 gamma setting too. The HDR often feels overdone, and the blacks just don't look as deep as they should—everything ends up feeling a bit washed out. I do love HDR in movies, though, it makes a big difference there, especially with how it adds depth and vibrancy. But for gaming, I mostly stick with SDR because it just feels more balanced and less distracting.

i’m playing through Silent Hill 2 Remake. The prison and labyrinth section - just too damn dark. Gave me a migraine. Didn’t realise I could alter the HDR elements. I’m probably not playing it as intended but I can see environment now! Was so frustrating!
