So, basically, how it came into being:
  • Eisner wants a CG studio to compete with Pixar -- he realizes that relations are on shaky ground. The Secret Lab is created.
  • People are hired for the Secret Lab. The only thing they're given is an egg. Nobody knows what to do with it.
  • In the meantime, Animal Kingdom is being created. Eisner wants a Dinosaur ride. He pushes for a dino movie.
  • Somebody remembers the Winston film. That project is resurrected again.
  • Innovative idea: CG dinos on live backgrounds.
  • Big loss: Chris Farley dies. Too late to change backgrounds now -- he's replaced with Joan Plowright and Dela Reese, thus some of the awkwardness of those characters (really, in what was supposed to be a heroic moment for Chris Farley, you just become afraid that somebody's going to break a hip!).
  • Strike 2: Walking with Dinosaurs is released. Does the same CG/live action blend as Dinosaur in less time at a far less budget.
  • Strike 3: Disney fans hate it, kids hate it, parents fall asleep. But, still make $100 million at the box office.

Basically, the movie had a LOT of things going against it. It really was a doomed project. And I didn't even mention the part where the government became involved due to the large amount of explosives purchased...

However, I still enjoyed it a lot (I enjoy some of the more recent films that a lot of Disney fans loathe). It does look great on Blu-Ray -- the movie looked great on DVD, so it's not that hard to look at least as good on Blu-Ray. Only MPG-2, I believe...

Really, in the end, the thing I didn't care about much is that it was too much of a Tarzan story and Disney released Tarzan around that time.

But, I'm a Dino freak. Love the animals -- I can't wait for Jurassic Park on Blu-Ray.

If you want a better idea of how it was supposed to be, read Raptor Red -- there's a good no-talking-animals dinosaur story.

soon, i hope... as soon as universal get's it's head out of the hd-dvd ass
