sad to say it does work. My copy of 40 yr old virgin was giving me fits, always locking up on the same part at the beginning. I ran it under water that was almost to hot to hold the disc under, dryed it off and it has worked flawlessly since. This Disc gets repeated play by my family (a big hit with us) so I'd say it's not a fluke...especially considering that before this, i couldn't get past the opening scene on several try's in my HD-A1 & 360.
As I rinsed it with the Uber Hot water i could see a clear film deteriorating and the disc got shinier as the hot water ate through it. Took all of about 30 seconds to get it all off, it was invisible to the naked eye until the steam from the hot water made it evident. Trust me, I thought it was just as ridiculous until I gave it a shot...before this, I continued to have problems with this disc and I really wanted to watch it....did the hot rinse, and it actually worked! This was the face I made:
This muct be how those alien abductee's feel, lol. But seriously...it's real.

It's basically the same thing people had to do with some original Xbox discs. Kinda funny that this problem/solution krept up with another Microsoft backed product.

I'd never heard of this for XBox games. I had dozens and never had the problem. Just the "dirty disc" error . . . y'know, the typical errors

Yeah it was usually to take care of the dirty disc errors that people got from brand new discs. The biggest culprit was from demo discs though. My guess is that they were made cheaper. I'm sure you can connect the dots. Xbox discs don't work, made on the cheap, had to boil. HD DVD discs don't work, made on the cheap....
