The switched outlets on the back of stereo equipment are rated to run components, such as Blu-ray or DVD players (or, in the case of my history, CD players, cassette decks, turntables, equalizers ).

High-draw components like subwoofers should not be plugged into them.

Yeah this is a bad idea. Just plug the subwoofer into a wall receptacle and let it go into and out of standby mode on its own.

I have seen someone do it before. It was a sight to behold, like the 4th of July in a stereo cabinet.

So i checked the back of my sub and it says that the light will show green when its on and red when its in standby but the light is always green, even when my receiver is off. How do I get it to go in standby? Theres no switches or anything on the back of it that I can see that would put it in standby...

I've used JBL powered speakers before for a stage set up. Usually they were in standby if they didn't have a signal coming to them. I'm not sure if your sub is the same way or not.

mzo0163,

Some subwoofers will wait several minutes before going from powered-on to standby mode. Check your sub after you stop playing audio after 15 minutes (best yet, shut the receiver off and wait 15 minutes). The LED should show standby mode.
