They are still offering the replacement cases for The Third Man

The Third Man won't fetch nearly as high of a price...... When Salo went OOP, the number of people collecting Criterions, or DVDs in general was relatively low......

Very few DVDs have become "collectible" to the point of high prices since Salo..... Even the Brazil Criterion I paid way too much for dropped significantly.

Could that possibly be true?! Can anyone confirm this?
That is not true. There was initial speculation over this, but Criterion themselves have said the title is OOP - both by showing the title as OOP on their website, and responding directly to a question about it on their Facebook page. Criterion has lost the rights to The Third Man and will not be selling it in any form.

There would be no reason for it to be listed as OOP (which means OUT OF PRINT remember not out of stock...) if the cases were just being switched. And on top of this they're already sending out plastic case titles.

My gawd!!!! No one reads anymore for themselves these days, do they? I'm sorry, but how many times are the same questions gonna be asked and have to be repeatedly answered about these cases?

People... please take the time to read not only the last page of the thread, but also a couple of pages back, so we don't have to keep reading the same ol' stuff. Please for the love of all that is Criterion!!!

For "Essential" Criterion viewing, I usually recommend (in this order and I've probably missed some)

The Seventh Seal
The Third Man
Wages of Fear
El Norte
The Last Metro
Chungking Express
Bottle Rocket
Well Beta, Citizen Kane was filmed in such a fantastic way, it's very influential and I respect it but entertainment wise, there were times and the film would be losing me or it would be just too slow and sometimes it would take forever to get the point. I hated that blonde chick as well, so freaken annoying but awesome ending. Didn't see it coming.

I would like a good asian cop noir especially after seeing that crap Black Rain, so now I'm interested in Chungking express.

Here's the thing about Kane. I'm a card carrying film snob so I admired all the technical boundaries and how it was groundbreaking but was kind of bored when I first rented it.

Then I got to see it in theatres. It's a revelation. There's something about seeing Citizen Kane with a crowd that's fantastic. I even dragged a friend along whose favorite film at the time was "Old School" with Will Ferrell and he had a blast.

That doesn't change your home viewing experience, just wanted to throw that out there.

Peace

It is my opinion that Chunking is one of the best Criterion Blus that I own.

I see BFI have done their usual "best" on the Leopard cover art, but that won't stop me. I've been watching it on Amazon since it was announced... What a sneaky little exclusive this is, just like The Red Shoes Blu (another HMV exclusive). I might wait for reviews, since its only a week away(according to HMV, 2 weeks according to bluray.com).

Do you feel better about yourself now?

I apologize I don't have the time to read through a thread that is 157 pages long. I tried to search for a simple answer to a simple question, but I find the search engine on this forum to be lacking.

I was gonna buy the DVD of Z still may pick it up during the Barnes sale, but according to Robert Harris at home theatre forum the picture quality and transfer are lacking on this release. He says a HD transfer would probably fix the issues.

I hope you get it to work.

My apologies, but I just keep seeing the same talk about the "The Third Man" and replacement cases going on in the News post, the thread about "The Third Man" going out of print, and also this thread, as well. Plus, I read the same stuff on the other forums I visit, as well, so I just needed a release... not to be directly aimed at you, though. It's unfortunate that there's so much redunancy on forums all across the internet, but that's how it goes, I suppose.

It's all good and I know what you mean. I hate seeing topics repeated, but it's going to happen on a "catch all" thread like this one that's been going on for a long time. My original question wasn't necessarily geared towards The Third Man, but I was just curious why people don't like the current packaging? I did find another thread where people were talking about having their collection look uniformed. I guess I can understand that, but I personaly like the current packaging, but I also say the bigger the better. I wish the cover art was still the size of LDs.

Nice find! I've had it pre-ordered on Amazon, but it hasn't dropped in price any, yet... my lowest price so far is $27.99.
