Yes, it's a great film, and I'm also waiting in vain for it to see a Blu-ray release someday.

I actually met Alexander MacKendrick years ago, while at art school, but I never really got a chance to talk to him about his films. I heard through other students about his troubles making Sweet Smell of Success, though. MacKendrick was in poor health at the time, and in a wheelchair.

Has it been confirmed as Region free, that company has a lot of region free titles but a lot of them are locked. I have a feeling this is gonna be locked.

Just blind-bought The Third Man from Amazon. I was hoping to get it along with some other Criterion BD's during the Black Friday sales, especially at Deep Discount where they offer 25% off and have similar prices to Amazon in the first place. But with this out of print issue popping up, I figured I would go ahead and buy The Third Man as soon as possible.

Nice. I hope Amazon does the same. I'll try to save some money for that sale.

I just bought two extra and if any are in the plastic case I will open it. I had to. For once, I want to be the smarmy eBay @$$ who has sealed OOP Criterion discs for sale years from now.

Fantastic news PowellPressburger! My only concern is whether it will match or exceed Amazon's Black Friday sales...

I could not wait until Black Friday sales and hope that there will be some "The Third Man" copies left so I ordered one from Amazon with -40% price.

I got "Monsoon Wedding" in the mail yesterday, and haven't found time to watch it..... perhaps I'll view it tonight..... My wife really enjoys it, so it's an easy sell.

I need some opinions on the fellow Criterions so I'll pick one of them up during this sale.

The Man Who Fell to Earth (I'm a huge fan of Bowie)
Howard's End (Seems pretty recent and would like to see what Criterion did with the PQ)
El Norte
The Last Metro
The Third Man (I thought Citizen Kane was a good movie but I'd never watch it again, is it the same with Third Man?)
Pierrot Le Fou
Last Emperor
Chungking Express
Jimi Hendrix Concert (I heart Hendrix)

The Man Who Fell to Earth (I'm a huge fan of Bowie) Being a Fan of Bowie doesn't really matter....it's not a concert video, and it's not one of the "Safer" blind buys.
Howard's End (Seems pretty recent and would like to see what Criterion did with the PQ) Wouldn't buy ANYTHING based on PQ, but with that said, it's a great film also....
El Norte Very good, not fast paced, a great character study....pretty sad film.
The Last Metro Very entertaining, great if you like war-era time-pieces. (as in, behind the scenes, people going on with their lives during wartime)
The Third Man (I thought Citizen Kane was a good movie but I'd never watch it again, is it the same with Third Man?) If you wouldn't
ever watch Citizen Kane again, I question your taste in all films! It's great..... the various angles he filmed at is simply "ART"

Pierrot Le Fou Filled with subtle humor, and it's a great satire of "Life" I enjoy it..... I find it very funny, although My wife thinks it's "weird"
Last Emperor A good look at the rise/fall of an emperor.... not my first choice however.
Chungking Express Good "Cop" movie.... drug smuggling, and suspenseful.... Has a very 80's feel to it too.
Jimi Hendrix Concert (I heart Hendrix) Why would you not get this if you're a big Hendrix fan I think this is a completely different animal than the rest of the "Films" however.
The Third Man is going OOP..... you can always pick up the other ones.....

For "Essential" Criterion viewing, I usually recommend (in this order and I've probably missed some)

The Seventh Seal
The Third Man
Wages of Fear
El Norte
The Last Metro
Chungking Express
Bottle Rocket

Some guy on the news link down in the comments about 'The Third Man' going OOP says that it's not actually going OOP they're just re-cataloging the film for a plastic case.

Could that possibly be true?! Can anyone confirm this?

I apologize if this has been asked, but what are these replacement cases you all are speaking of and are they free? Also, what do you all not like about the current packaging?

Since it is going OOP, "The Third Man" will become the "Salo" of Blu-ray's!

Newer discs already are in the plastic case. It's out of print both on Blu-ray and DVD.

I got a e-mail response from Criterion cause I ordered a replacement case for THE THIRD MAN late Friday 23rd.

He said they got in some more replacements and mine shipped out yesterday.

So I should see it soon.

So for those who were waiting around the time I put an order in I would say yours is near too.
