Grats on the Onkyo. Two of the Yammys I own,the RX-v465 and 665 process the audio while in HDMI passthrough.I guess thats just the term they use for this process.

each mfg can use the terms differently, there is video passthru and audio passthru, audio is the one to watch out for because that means the audio will need to be passed to the TV or you will have to use a different cable to process audio in the receiver.

all HDMI v1.3a receivers will handle audio internally, HDMI v1.1 will also need to state LCPM via HDMI to know that you are OK with getting audio through HDMI connection... however Sonys older 710 used to say passthrough and it still processed the audio, just PCM was 2 channel and bitstream audio came through as Dolby Digital and DTS lossy...

the yamaha x65 definition of "passthrough" is that you can pass an hdmi signal w/ audio/video to your display without having to power your receiver on. so for instance, if you just want to watch the news, you can do so w/o having to power on the receiver, and you'd be using your tv speakers for sound. basically, it turns the receiver into an hdmi switch. it can come in handy when the significant other just wants to watch her HGTV without surround...
