the yamaha x65 definition of "passthrough" is that you can pass an hdmi signal w/ audio/video to your display without having to power your receiver on. so for instance, if you just want to watch the news, you can do so w/o having to power on the receiver, and you'd be using your tv speakers for sound. basically, it turns the receiver into an hdmi switch. it can come in handy when the significant other just wants to watch her HGTV without surround...
