Red Riding Hood Review Thread (Use Spoiler Tags)

Hey,

Anyone remembers the Red Riding Hood stories we grew up on. Well expect a big Gothic version of it: (How Dark Would It Be?!!)


Catherine Hardwicke is set to direct this film:

Catherine Hardwicke has signed on to direct The Girl With the Red Riding Hood for Appian Way and Warner Bros. The gothic reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood was announced earlier this month, with Orphan screenwriter David Leslie Johnson attached to pen the script.


Not much is known about the new take, other than it will be loosely based on the famous fairy tale, is being described as a werewolf movie, and has a teenage love triangle at its center. Hardwicke is a perfect choice for this project as her filmmaking career thus far has been filled with teenage stories with female leads. She broke onto the directing scene with the Sundance indie Thirteen (starring Evan Rachel Wood), and has since directed The Nativity Story (starring Keisha Castle-Hughes as Mary) and, of course, Twilight (starring Kristen Stewart). She also directed the 2005 film Lords of Dogtown.

The story has changed many times over the years, and is best known in the Brothers Grimm variant. But earlier versions were much darker, the earliest printed version from the 17th century ended with Riding Hood being slaughtered by the wolf. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:


“The story had as its subject an “attractive, well-bred young lady”, a village girl of the country being deceived into giving a wolf she encountered the information he needed to find her grandmother’s house successfully and eat the old woman while at the same time avoiding being noticed by woodcutters working in the nearby forest. Then he proceeded to lay a trap for the Red Riding Hood. The latter ends up eaten by the wolf and there the story ends. The wolf emerges the victor of the encounter and there is no happy ending.”

It is unclear which version of the classic tale the Gothic reimagining will take influence from, but one could imagine it might be the older tellings. Hollywood could give a “Gothic reimagining” spin to any of the classic fairy tales and I would be interested. I’m actually kinda disappointed that Disney jumped on Alice in Wonderland, as I was hoping that one of the dark Alice projects would have gone into production.

But don’t expect to see this film on the big screen any time soon, or ever. Appian Way seems to announce a new project in development each month (I might be slightly exaggerating for dramatic effect). IMDb Pro lists 22 upcoming properties in pre-production, but the company turns out an average of one film per year. So, unless things dramatically pick up, chances are we’ll never see this project on the big screen. Appian has a list a mile long of promising projects in development, including: Akira, Atari, Aquaman, Conspiracy of Fools, Ninja Scroll, and a couple projects with both Dicaprio and Martin Scorsese attached. Hardwicke is also attached to an adaptation of Hamlet for Overture 21 Jump Street, and Maxium Ride at Sony.

Almost a year ago Catherine Hardwicke signed with Warner Bros. and Appian Way to direct The Girl with the Red Riding Hood, a “gothic retelling” of the Little Red Riding Hood story. There hasn’t been much public movement on the film since then, but Hardwicke is still attached, and the studio now has a lead actress in mind to get the film moving: Amanda Seyfried.

The LA Times says that original writer David Johnson is still working on the development process with Hardwicke, and that he has delivered a new draft of the script. Speaking about the script and reactions to it, the LAT drops references to both Twilight and Shutter Island, which is a pair of films about as different from one another as it’s possible to be. That makes me wonder how this is actually going to work out.

See, the studio naturally wants a Twilight sort of thing, and sees the film, as the LAT puts it, as a werewolf movie with the “requisite dark/dangerous/romantic elements that” appeal to Twilight fans. But the script is supposedly an upper level take on horror that calls back to the approach used for Shutter Island. These things are not the same. They are not of a piece. A genre exercise a la Scorsese’s latest would be a smart, adult take that uses genre as a jumping-off point for a more layered story. Twilight is, well, Twilight.

The connective tissue might be Hardwicke, and Seyfried, if she signs on. In Hardwicke’s Twilight, there were scenes between Bella and her father that were a lot more effective than most of the rest of the film. With Seyfried, who can be so expressive when given a reason (or command), Hardwicke might actually be able to craft a film that can retain some intrigue and genuine gothic atmosphere while also courting the Twi-hards.

I like the story, even after the horrible Hoodwinked but I don't like Seyfried at all so this is a pass from me.

Max Irons, Julie Christie, and Gary Oldman Join "Red Riding Hood"

Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons) has joined Amanda Seyfried and Shiloh Fernandez in Catherine Hardwicke’s Girl with the Red Riding Hood. Heat Vision also reports that Julie Christie and Gary Oldman are in talks to come on board the flick, which is a gothic retelling of the “Little Red Riding Hood” fairy tale. This version is set in a medieval village that’s trying to fend off a werewolf.

Irons will play “Henri, the son of a blacksmith who, through an arrangement, is to marry Seyfried’s character.” However, we learned earlier this week that Fernandez was cast as, “an orphaned woodcutter for whom Seyfried falls, much to the displeasure of her family.” This likely means that Henri is a jerk and/or is going to die horribly so Seyfried and Fernandez can be together. As for Christie, she would play Seyfried’s grandmother. As for Oldman, he would be “Father Soloman, a man whose title is the Witchfinder General and whose job is to find and kill the werewolf.” One of the coolest things you can put on a resume or business card is “Witchfinder General.”

I like the cast so far. Never knew that Jeremy had a son, but he's a good lookin cat and if he can act like his dad, he could have a bright future in this business. And I'll see anything with Seyfried , or Oldman

This summer Amanda Seyfried will begin work on "Red Riding Hood," helmed by "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke. Seyfried admits that when fans come out to theaters on April 22, 2011, they will definitely get a little creeped out by the film's interpretation of the iconic fairytale bad guy, the Big Bad Wolf.

"The wolf is the enemy and it’s a very, very dangerous enemy and nobody knows who the wolf is. So it’s a hunt and it's really cool," Seyfried told MTV News at the junket for "Letters For Juliet," adding that she has an actor in mind to play the pivotal role.

"I'm not going to say [who it is] because I don’t want to jinx it. But he happens to be a really great actor. There's so many great actors. I have no idea," she teased. "I actually haven’t talked to Catherine Hardwicke, the director, in a couple weeks, so I gotta get back to that."

While she remained tight-lipped about who she'd like to see in the wolf role, Seyfried did name some of the cast as it is currently shaping up. "[As for the] finalized [casting of all the characters], I'm not sure, but I definitely know it's seeming right now it's going to be Gary Oldman, Julie Christie. It's definitely Max Irons to play my fiancé and Shiloh Fernandez to play my lover," she said.

Ultimately, Seyfried couldn't resist the opportunity to drop a small hint. "[Catherine] knows [who I want for the wolf]… she knows. [I don’t want to say] 'cause what if it isn’t and then the person that does play the wolf is like, 'Oh you wanted him.' [His initials are] VC. You're not gonna figure it
out."
