Monsters vs. Aliens
PQ - 5.0 AQ - 5.0 Film - 4.5 I know some people don't think much of this movie, but I love it. Some other animated movies may be deeper, but I think only a handful of recent ones are more fun to watch. The PQ and AQ are both fabulous of course. A few animated movies might be slightly better in both areas, but this is still worthy of 5's in both. |

I think I'll try a new style of reviewing stuff, because I figured out that there are four different aspects to films that I focus on and will affect whether or not I enjoy it; feel free to let me know if it stinks or not. The last aspect is always optional, since so many movies are there are relatively brainless.
Last night, I watched "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" through Netflix. I was a Pee Wee Herman fan as a kid, but I wanted to see this more because it was one of Tim Burton's first films. Entertainment Value: 3.5/5 The movie has a lot more comedy than I expected, without being too kiddie-like, and is rather funny at times. It moves at a decent pace. I gotta say though that some parts seem a bit creepy (especially in regards to Paul Rueben's previous controversy). Qualities as a Story: 3/5 Characters are fun, but not very well-developed (although it is kinda funny to see fully-grown men acting childish). Story is average (rather silly actually). But it is enjoyable. Qualities as a Movie: 4/5: It's more distinctive than I expected; the photography is solid, the acting is spot-on, and the direction is good (I think some parts have a distinctive Tim Burton feel to them too, especially with all the dream sequences). Production value is a little cheap (must have been a low-budget film). Emotional/Intellectual Impact: 1/5 Not much going on here; I'd give it a point for being funny, and for having a basic plot structure detailing a character's journey and showing how he (slightly) grew. I was ultimately surprised as to how entertaining this film was, and as to how mature it actually is. Its comedy reminded me so much of an "Ernest" movie, with possibly a alight resemblance to "Dumb and Dumber." I found it funny most of the time, and despite some of its darker and more perverse moments, it was quite enjoyable all the way through. 3.5/5 altogether. |

hadn't seen this in a very long time--
CUJO -- slow start, very intense once it gets going, fabulous direction and strong performances by Dee Wallace and the little boy-- this is actually a very good film-- blu-ray was grainy in spots, looked good in the daytime scenes-- 4.0 out of 5.0 blu ray PQ-- 3.5 out of 5.0 |

And so long as this reviewing style works, tonight I watched: "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," Extended Edition. Could have waited for the Theatrical Cut on BD, but nah. Entertainment Value: 4.5/5; a little long, especially compared to the next two films, but it moves at a decent pace and jam packs a lot of detail in each shot. Visuals are very strong. It always manages to maintain my interest. Qualities as a Story: 5/5; A classic story adapted very well onto film (a few liberties taken, but I don't fault the film for it). Characters are quite strong and rather easy to relate to. The story is a little slow to start, but picks up pretty well and remains strong all the way through. The Extended Cut also elaborates a lot more on certain story elements and the lore of the Middle Earth; it's well worthwhile watching. Qualities as a Film: 5/5; I do believe that "LOTR" overall has the best quality; excellent acting, good writing, strong cameramanship, good cinematography, a very detailed production design, and awesome music. I'd say it's perfect. Emotional/Intelectual Impact: 4/5. The film carries over the book's themes well (concerning industrialization, addiction, war, etc). Some parts are tear-jerking without being overly sappy. Strong characters and writing helps a lot too; Gandalf's speech about life is darn near awe-inspiring. Altogether, 5/5 (rounded up from 4.6), and still a favorite. Tomorrow, the sequels! ![]() |

A Beautiful Mind
Film: 5/5 (i have a soft spot for nerdy math geeks, having been one myself -- although nowhere near on the level of Nash or even Princeton grad level). crowe's pickup line was one of the greatest in film history: [Show spoiler] ![]() -crowe's performance is among the best of the decade...proof positive that he is one of the greatest actors alive...he goes from commander of the Roman army to math geek?? are you effin kidding me?? this guy is insanely good. then throw in Cinderella man, another perfect performance. it blows my mind how other actors that can't compare to crowe are exalted to a level that is ridiculous, relatively speaking. He's a tremendous actor with great range. For whatever reason, users on this site seem to dislike both Crowe and A Beautiful Mind. I think both he and the film are excellent. Connelly was great and looked beautiful, as well. |

Jennifer Connelly was too hot for her role and Crowe I had a hard time accepting to be a math genious too. It just didn't feel real to me, to Hollywoody for my taste ![]() Maybe I should give it another try? |

I can understand your complaints, I just don't personally agree with them. I think that if you can accept him as a math genius, which I did, then it's likely that you'll like the film. Conversely, if he's not believable to you then you will not. As for Connelly being "too hot," I don't think that has much relevance at all. There are innumerable beautiful women that are attracted to or are married to less attractive men. |
