Typically, retail computers know what the "lowest selling price" was within a certain time period (usually 30, 60, or 90 days), and that's the amount of credit they will offer someone on a return, if the person can't show how much they actually paid for the item. So, if they had the controllers on sale for $39.99 or something recently, that's what you would get back... even if you had paid regular price.
